I am more than convinced now that Hopkins could have been an elite champion in any era (middleweight, smw, lhw). Hopkins is just dedicated, dependable and determined and always rises to the occasion. Hopkins has one the best defensive minds in the game and ring smarts. Hopkins is like fine wine and he ages very well.

I agree, his very high ring iq and skills match up greatly in any era.

I agree, he is one of the smartest to lace em up.

Would have been dominant in any era and has outlasted nearly every other fighter who was champion in the 90s.

My thought concerning him are how long has he left? If i was him i would face cloud and froch both tough fights but winnable given his condition by the time he faces them then retire.

    Calzaghe {prime} v's Hopkins {prime} = Calzaghe win.

Fight held in Wales, obviously Calzaghe win.
Fight held in a neutral country, Calzaghe win.
Fight held in the USA, close Calzaghe win.

Calzaghe beats Hopkins anytime any place anywhere at any stage of their careers, Hopkins is a great, Hopkins is fantastic but obviously Calzaghe is a great also, Hopkins just cant cope with Calzaghes speed.

I agree with this list for the most part, although I think a prime Hearns and Benn might be active enough to get a Points win if Hopkins doesnt get them hurt. Heres a few more -

Hopkins vs Monzon @ 160 (Undecided) :silly
Hopkins vs Ray Leonard @ 160 (Leonard UD) :|
Hopkins vs LaMatta @ 168 (Hopkins UD) :tired
Hopkins vs Ray Robinson @ 160 (Robinson UD) :happy
Hopkins vs Archie Moore @ 175 (Damn tough one to call for me). :patsch
Hopkins vs Billy Conn @ 175 (Hopkins KO) :dead
Hopkins vs Bob Foster @ 175 (Undecided) :silly
Hopkins vs M. Spinks @ 175 (Spinks UD) :good

Please reply with your input, that avatar cracks me up lol.

If Hopkins is elite in any era, then so are a number of fighters today elite in any era. I'm glad Calzaghe beat him....... Never really like Hopkins, I can still remember him saying to Calzaghe something like 'I will never lose to a white man'.

    Well you did Hopkins!

Michael Nunn would beat Hopkins, if you thought Jermain Taylors athletecism bothered Bernard, you wouldn't want to know what Michael Nunns could do. :patsch

I have always felt that way about Hopkins. Skill and ability to adjust is phenomenal.

So what happened when RJJ handled him with relative ease, with one hand?

Or when old, brittle Calzaghe went over to his yard, at his weight, and made him want 5 minute time-outs?

In any era though! In any era!
