Hopkins knows who he is Sugar ray leonard knew who he was, marvin Hagler did, Duran did Three greats You going to argue with them? lol good luck
The biggest thing that made me think Hopkins was over the hill in his fight with Calzaghe was that he had to fake a couple low blows inorder to get two 5 minutes breaks. Because it looked like he was getting to tired to last. Not sure what was going on there because in the pavlik fights and both Pascal fights he really looked like he had plenty to spare.:blood In the Jones fight too he looked like he was gassing at time too. Again never boxed but maybe there is something about being in control to fighting at your own pace the makes that much of a difference:huh B/c thats really the only difference I can see between these examples. And if he was taking dope it wouldn't make sense that he chose to take it from some fights but not for others. That just wouldn't add up.
I just think it was down to Hopkins tactical ability in the ring, he knew a scrappy fight tying up etc would be best tactic against a fighter like calzaghe to frustrate and maybe nick a decision, because calzaghe wouldnt give him a minutes peace. Against Pavlik he knew he could afford to show boat and box his head off because pavlik wasnt in the same league, as he showed again with Pascal and no doubt with dawson
Bernard is well past his prime, and was so against Slap Happy Joe. Bernard had an off night. If Joe hadn't been afraid of a rematch, B-Hops would have had revenge. Bernard landed the only meaningful punches in the whole fight vs Joe.
Hopkins is not in his prime and while Pascal is a good fighter, he is not great and can be amateurish at times. Hopkins has the capacity to fight on due to his health choices, not being athletically dependent -- the man has fighting ability that ages well in boxing. He is past prime, he got rocked by Pascal twice big time, which would not have occurred years ago. He was past it when he fought Calzaghe as well, just not as much as he is now. But his skills alone gets him past most. It's a testament to the man. Calzaghes victory is really nothing to brag about, many had him losing and it was one of the ugliest fights ever. Neither looked impressive... and BHopkins should've got a rematch, as it was a close fight. But, whatever, what is done is done.
Calzaghe fans are insecure indeed. Of course Hopkins is past his prime, and he was when he fought Calzaghe. Calzaghe's a smart fighter who managed to beat Hopkins in a close fight by outworking him. In the process he got countered, knocked down, and looked almost amateurish at times.
hops wasn't too far over the hill obviously, but who cares b/c that was one of the ugliest fights of all time where no one looked good (hops not landing enough and calz not landing anything good) and it was very hard to say anyone (esp fans) really won that fight
Calzaghe beats Taylor, Tarver, Wright, Pavlik, Ornelas lol and Pascal. He already beat RJJ. So tell me who on Hopkins' pre-LHW resume Calzaghe has trouble with and prove why Hopkins is apparently such a better fighter than Calzaghe :hey I tell you what Hopkins has got - excuses, and LOTS of them - for losing to Calzaghe.
Funny how the Hopkins fans throw up the "threatened" smokescreen when their chickens come home to roost i.e. being asked to back up their claims that Hopkins was old, past it, over the hill etc when Calzaghe fought him when Hopkins has since gone on to beat Pavlik and Pascal twice :hey I guess either Hopkins was old, past it, over the hill when he fought Calzaghe, and Pavlik and Pascal are just crap, or Hopkins wasn't old, past it, over the hill when he fought Calzaghe and just looked like crap because Calzaghe was better than him
I'VE BEEN a fan of Hopkins ever since he beat my favorite fighter in Trinidad. I've given him all the respect since then, ANNNNND have been rooting for him in every single fight since then, BUUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT, FACTS ARE FACTS, and the bottom line is most Hopkins' fans can't or don't wanna accept the fact he lost to a better guy. The fight was balanced in most aspects, even BOTH were not on their prime.... At least we all know Calzaghe was not ... I don't know that much about Hopkins... Calzaghe WON, CLEAN & CLEAR, ..... LIKE IT OR NOT!!
Hopkins was "over the hill" relative to the Hopkins of the early 21st century. I don't totally discount Calzaghe's victory over Bernard but we're talking about a 40+ plus year old fighter. And lets not pretend that Joe put on a clinic. He scored a SD in a fight many people had him losing. And any momentum he had with that victory he subsequently squandered by facing the ghost of Roy Jones and retiring. I want to like Joe but his resume leaves a lot to be desired
