Don't bother watching them. I can tell you right now what Calzaghe did better. He has a higher punch output. There, that's about it. Calzaghe = Greatest SMW ever ACCOMPLISHMENT wise. But not H2H.

There's nothing at all wrong with thinking that Calzaghe is such a great fighter - however there IS something wrong in thinking he'd beat RJJ at 168. That is just crazy talk.. :nut

It's pretty tough to call since there isn't a lot of footage of some of the old fighters, plus there's been a lot of great fighters in history.

Roy was big @ 160 and wouldn't have been a middleweight under the old weigh-in rules. Under the older rules, he's either @ 168 or 175.

He'd have his hands full with guys like Bob Foster, Michael Spinks, maybe Dwight Qawi too. And of course, there's guys like Billy Conn, Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, etc...

Even though the super middleweight division didn't come around until the 80s, there were still fighters throughout history that weighed around 168.

The weights of fighters like Billy Conn and Archie Moore didn't just jump from 160 to 175 like that, they worked their way up to the limit (or were all over the place like Moore, 160, 175, 166, 162, 176, etc...)

All good points, especially Conn, Moore and Spinks.

I've only seen a limited selection of B & W footage of the former two, but I watched Spinks when he was fighting.

IMO, there's a quantum leap from Roy's movement and overall level of performance compared to all three.

These things can never be known with certainty, but I would favour Roy over any of the three.

And the Jones and HBO sent Collins a career high offer, which he turned down. Lots of fighters talk.....sign the contract.

And as for your amateur comparisons. It's not relevant. Lots of fighters beat other fighters in the amateurs only to lose to them in the pros. McClellan was a very good fighter, but he had already lost before facing Benn, so it isn't like the illness is what caused him to lose fights, though it may have contributed in that particular one.

I thought Collins did sign to fight Jones? I heard he was in training for it when he got injured in sparring. He was then told by doctors to not fight again because of brain scarring or something:think

    I maybe wrong.

Under old rules he would be less muscular, so he'd easily make 160 lb.

I think nobody beats Robinson at 147, and only a couple at 160.

Very very few would beat Armstrong between 126 and 147.

I can see a few middleweights beating Jones, nobody at 168, and several at 175. Therefore, no, he is not.

Here's the thing; this boils down to a question about Roy's chin. How good do you think it is? If you think those devastating KO's were accidents of age and his chin just wouldn't be vulnerable to punches that these ATG fighters would land then he's a reasonable pick. If you think otherwise (like me) I like your Whitaker shout a bit better.
