the reason sergio martinez is favored to beat those 2 guys is because of his size, i repeat only because of his size. Nobody would pick a welter version of him who doesn't rehydrate for more than 155lbs to beat floyd or pac.

He doesn't need floyd or pac to become p4p#1, he can do that alone if he wins the against the likes of bute, ward, froch, dirrell and it would easily surpass anything floyd or pac has done recently and would get much more respect than acting like a high school senior picking on junior middle kids.

Yes, but they also aren't going to be available for a long while. No one at 168 who is even in the realm of great is available right now or in the immediate future. This isn't simply a matter of not wanting to fight Kessler, Froch, Ward, or Bute, it's a matter of their not being free for a fight anytime soon.

 

why can't bute fight him, or kessler, I can understand froch/ward as they are probably gonna be tied up for a year.

Theoretically they're more availabe than Froch or Ward, but both of them want first crack at the winner of the Super Six. Beating Martinez is going to do very little towards attaining that goal, and it makes far more economic sense for those two to fight each other anyway (after the tune-ups they already have booked right now of course). I mean, even if they don't fight each other, Martinez is still pretty much a high-risk low-reward fight for either of them, as a poor performance could preclude a far more lucrative showdown against the winner of the tournament.

Dirrell appears far more available, but I'm not particularly sure there's a lot to be gained by fighting him right now (if of course he even fights again this year).

 

i highly doubt that, that is because he ain't calling them out:deal. Martinez is high reward money/legacy for any of those guys. They would jump at the chance the moment martinez decides to join in at 168:yep

 

super six ain't gonna be over for another 6 months at least then you add another 4 for the fight, Kessler or Bute could cement their legacy by beating Martinez in the interim or they could lose and it would hurt their marketability.

yeah but going for those guys seems to make sense of what is needed to be done to proove himself, not fighting pac and may. available or not if sergio wants to really proove what he's claiming then he should try to fight them or move up with the bigger guys,Floy mayweather doesn't seem to have any plans of even lacing up any gloves for now. i mean manny seems to always have plans of a next opponent or you either never know what freedie really has in mind so he's not actually considered as available all the time, but that doesn't keep everyone from calling him out does it? Even if its a much bigger sergio martinez.

 

I'm sorry but I don't really think "calling out bigger guys" is a major requisite of greatness, especially when there is no chance whatsoever of those fights being made. Symbolic gestures, however admirable we might find them as fans, should ultimately have little bearing on how we actually evaluate fighters. Also, Top Rank's plans for Pacquiao have rarely been as set in stone as the current tournament at 168 is; the closest approximation has been the Marquez fight, where the contracts were written up well before the Mosley bout took place.

 

its one of the reasons why I rank nonito donaire higher than Martinez in my p4p list, he has been moving up in weight and destroying guys. People here seem to think that he is too big for bantamweight but he's just tall and uses his reach well, he' still kinda skinny, last fight Montiel outweighed him in the fight. I applaud sergio for moving up to 160 but he regressed fightiing a jmw, it seems like he is cherrypicking smaller fighters now just like Floyd to try to prove his greatness. Try the best you can to get the good fights at 160 no more 154 lbers, if that don't work try catchweights with the 168 lbers, that would garner him more fans and respect.
