There is no way Gene Tunney is top 15, let alone top 10.

see, i think there's an argument (not strong) but tunney in the top 15 based on the wins over dempsey and gibbons. risko is a decent scalp but greb as a middleweight (decent his own prowess against heavies) doesn't count terribly much in his heavyweight resume cause he was just bigger than a middleweight in those wins.

I think the relevant questions are: 1) who did Gene fight of who he
    This content is protected
have fought; 2) how did Gene
    This content is protected
in light of the people he did fight.

The fact is that he didn't beat that many heavyweights. And outside of Dempsey (who you yourself has said was old and inactive), Heeney, Gibbons and 1 fight with Greb, his comp at heavyweight isn't in the same class as true top 10 heavyweights. Of course you ignored this when I brought it up to you by trying to say their records were incomplete. I asked you to educate me on their records but you couldn't because you simply don't know they're incomplete, you're guessing that to back up your opinion. Now you're trying to get someone else to fight your battle because you simply don't know enough to compete. You don't have an opinion of your own. You have fanboy idolization and mimick the opinions of others as it suits your agenda. Have you checked out the poll? More than 87% believe Tunney is not a top 10 all time heavyweight. Lol, that must be burning you up. :fire

Bert Sugar smokes crack cigars! :smoke

Gene Tunny is a skinny lighthvy who has a heavywieght resume of 2 wins VS a past-primer hobo who was more rusted then a bucket of rust flakings And he even needed a 14 second longcount to save his sorry ass in fight no.2. So IMO Tunny is not top 20 at heavy, he is one overrated hombre, who Dempsey-Fangirls will forever bumsuckle to protect their precious tramp idol. :yep

With all due respect, I don't see how who he could have fought is relevant. If there are good fighters to fight it helps your legacy. If they aren't there we can't just make the assumption Tunney would have defeated them had they been. We know Gene was a fantastic fighter, but that doesn't make his heavyweight resume any deeper or prove (as likely as it would have been) that he would not have lost in his next fight after Heeney, had he not retired. It would be tantamount to saying Lazslo Papp WOULD have won the middleweight championship and gone down as a top 10 ATG. Its a nice thought, but nothing on his record supports it.

I have him number 16. Missing fights with wills, sharkey and schmelling stops him being top 10 inlight of his short rein.

Because Tunney has nothing on them with regards to HW resume.

As great a fighter as Tunney was this is the truth. Saying he would have beat this one or beat that one is a guessing game that cannot be backed up factually. Rating a fighters place in history, in my opinion, has to be judged by the fights he had. At heavyweight Gene's resume is just to shallow to be in the top 10.

Tunney is a Top 10 fighter in my opinion.. as he was one of if not thee most intelligent fighter ever. he had fantastic skills was fleet-footed with a devastating right-cross and excellent left-jab, he was intelligent and clever enough to be able to master Harry Greb by working out Greb's style and beating him. Tunney beat master boxers in Loughran, Gibbons,Greb, Levinsky & Delaney he withstood and mastered the rampaging Dempsey. his skills was incredible compared to other heavyweights as is his overall record of 66-1-2 from middleweight to heavyweight... Without doubt Gene Tunney is a brilliant legendary fighter and a Top 10 Heavyweight great..

Boxing Historian Tracy Callis rates Tunney No6 Heavyweight ever
Boxing Historian Nat Fleischer rates Tunney No8 Heavyweight ever
Charley Rose ranks Tunney No6 Heavyweight ever
WBM Poll in 1974 rated Tunney No7 Heavyweight ever
Nat Loubet Historian rated Tunney No6 Heavyweight ever
Historian Bert Sugar rates Tunney No5 Heavyweight ever
Historian John Durant rates Tunney No5 Heavyweight ever
Bill Brennan rates Tunney No5 Heavyweight ever
Historian Arthur Harris rates Tunney No5 Heavyweight ever.

But what you are saying is all the above Boxing historians are wrong and you are right... You are a "HATER" JAB and it is now well known that you are a hater.. you hate all the great fighters from yesteryear, your posts all point to you being a hater, you claim Dempsey, Tyson, Frazier, Marciano & Tunney are not Top 10 fighters yet Tommy Morrison is up there with the all time greats, you hate on Willie Pep & Sandy Sadler and your only imput on this forum is tolling and ridicule of anyone who praises a boxer pre-1992.... you claim i have been destroyed on the Dempsey thread yet you could not be further from the truth. many knowledgable posters have voiced the same opinions as myself and made their case to prove you wrong and show you to be a HATER... you started this thread and your only case for Tunney not being a Top 10 Heavyweight is "He was not a heavyweight" Gene Tunney was The Heavyweight Champion of the World you stupid clown  with All those Boxing Historians rating him as a Heavyweight...would Tommy Morrison be a heavyweight without his steroids ?
