White collar / Executive Boxing - taking off in Oz!

Call it what you like - 'white collar' boxing / 'executive' boxing - but it's gaining some momentum in Australia, having been big in the States some years ago.

There have been a few organisations running these formats for a while now, and others are bobbing up. Here's just another couple of examples:

PROFESSIONAL surfer Bobby Martinez dropped his board and donned the gloves last week.

Martinez sparred with Australia’s Surfing Life magazine’s Scott Chapman at Varsity Lakes’ Elevate Fitness and the Gold Coast Mail’s own Blainey Woodham was present to capture the moment.

Gym owner Gavin Topp said Martinez was involved in the Fight Like a Pro 10-week training program.

The boxing program culminates with 24 men who have never boxed competitively entering the ring at the Southport Sharks on March 18.

Executive Fight Club

Are you ready for The Challenge?

Basement Boxing at Acumotum is the home of Executive Fight Club.

Executive Fight Club is running a 12 week challenge for those who want to push themselves physically and mentally and put on a show in front of friends and work colleagues at Melbourne's premium Executive Boxing Event.

The Gala Event will be a black tie affair and will be held at The Powerhouse on the edge of Albert Park Lake on May 27th 2011.

The event is open to guys and girls of all fitness levels and ability. Ideally we are looking for people with very limited or no boxing experience training. Training will take place at Basement Boxing, 128 Commercial Road, Prahran.

It is not open to those who have had previous amateur fights.

There is a beneficiary charity for the event, St Mary's House of Welcome. Help to radically improve the lives of local, disadvantaged people by getting into the shape of your life!

What will be expected of you:
•You commit to at least 2 of the 3 training sessions per week (Tue & Thur at 6pm, Sat at 9am)
•You need to commit to selling a minimum of 2 tables of 10 guests on the night

That's harsh!

Did you see the Pommy one where they had a gay guy fighting, and they mainly concentrated on him and his opponent in a documentary sort of format?

 

How did it go as an event Max? What was the feedback mate?

White collar boxing was big in the States about 10 years ago.

It was held mainly for charity fundraising purposes, and each year they held a USA v UK card - and each country took it in turn to host the event.

The US authorities banned White collar boxing in about 2006, but I believe only just recently they've had the go-ahead again.

 

It certainly worked well in the States until they banned it - but at least it's been re-instated over there now.

A bloke called John E. Oden was, and probably still is, the major player in the States for White collar boxing.

A great guy - I've had the pleasure to chat with him - and subsequently bought and read his book - which I'd recommend to anyone.
