Thanks, I didn't see them either. I think Teddy is right, Pascal doesn't know how to fight. He is just fast. I guess that happens when you have RJJ as an idol..
Wow, I really couldn't disagree with Teddy Atlas more. Oddly enough, as I was watching the interview with Teddy the Friday prior to the Hopkins/Pascal II match, I was taken back by Teddy's somewhat quick response to the question of whether Hopkins would be capable of fighting a young man's fight. He responded by insinuating that the fight was completely in the hands of Pascal, leaving out the possibility that Hopkins could turn the match into a brawl or that Hopkins could conceivably disallow Pascal to fight his game. After some prodding, Teddy eventually outlined a hastily, and interestingly enough, psychic analysis of exactly how Hopkins would ultimately defeat Pascal. At the time, I was completely convinced that Hopkins would disallow any sort of effective offense from Pascal, and that the absurd amount of experience, boxing IQ and 12 previous rounds of experience with Pascal, (not to mention 24 rounds with Pascal's "idol" RJJ) would create an almost impossible situation for Pascal. Teddy knows that he is ultimately wrong, and although, he has a point, today's champions do seem to lack a strong grasp of boxing fundamentals, it is ultimately Hopkins' skill and ability to execute strong ring strategies effectively that led to the victory. Hopkins made Pascal look bad. Hopkins is good at that, and of course, executing his game plans. Credit where credit is due. Hopkins truly was channeling Archie Moore level ring generalship that night.
Is Teddy Atlas married? If he is I feel sorry for his wife and kids. This guy is the most miserable sob on tv
Teddy overdid it. Hopkins deserves respect for the win. He was trying to act like it was Hopkins fault that these fighters today aren't as skilled as some in the past. Hopkins is beating these young champs at this age, and that's very impressive. And also, Pascal is a skilled fighter with power, but it's just that his activity slows a little in the second half of fights. Afterall, Atlas picked Pascal to win, so that tells you that he saw skills.
You're saying Teddy didn't give him credit and respect? He didn't say that at all... But it was Hopkins who chose to fight Pascal. Teddy pretty much said that Pascal was a flawed fighter with easily exploitable flaws. Well duh, everyone who knows a little about boxing knew that about Pascal... 'skilled'? He throws wide looping punches, jumps in with his shots, simple fact; he doesn't have good boxing technique. The only way he's beating guys is because he's fast and powerful. Take out those attributes (which aren't really skill, they're physical attributes), he'd be a bum. That's a stupid statement. He choose Pascal to win a title and become the oldest champion, making $ in the process of course... The fact that he chose Pascal shows that he saw flaws he could exploit. Because obviously, if both fighters are equally skilled, the prime fighter will consistently beat the older, slower, past prime fighter. So the fact that he chose Pascal tells you that he saw exploitable flaws and an opponent he knew he could beat. Teddy nailed it this time. Couldn't have been more right. Pascal isn't close to being an ATG champ...
