While this can seem to be a reasonable assumption on the surface, it might be expected that Mike Spinks and Holyfield would have done the same thing to Qawi, had those matchups never taken place. Yet he gave the Jinx a challenging go, and remains convinced to thsi day that steroids were the key element of Holyfield's ability to prevail over him. (In their first bout, Evander succeeded exclusively through sheer volume of punches thrown, not better technique, and Ike never took a backward step. Foster was never as mobile or active as either.) In his dethroning of Saad Muhammad, Dwight did indeed stand up to hellacious firepower, and he even got James Scott on his bicycle. (Although Scott was soundly decisioned by Qawi, James did surprise and impress me with his lateral movement, a capacity I'd never seen him demonstrate before.) Rationally, Foreman should have annihilated the old fat version of Qawi, George being at the lightest weight of his second career, yet Ike actually stood up to him pretty well, for as long as he lasted, and indeed managed to win some rounds before retiring on his stool. If Dwight was a midget compared to Foster, what does that make him in comparision to Foreman?
Joey Maxim lost every time against ezzard and archie. His win over patterson was a gift, his win over bivins was a split decision in his hometown, and his fights with walcott were also controversial. Not to mention a welterweight was schooling him prior to the stoppage. maxim is overrated!
I would take Qawi over Foster as well, Duo :good I've never seen this thread and quite surprised at the Maxim support...It's great...Maxim certainly has the record to back himself up...One thing to add: A fighter by the name of Carl Olson, who usually gets dismissed on this board as a second rater, outpointed Joey Maxim...People don't realize what a good fighter Olson was ...:-( Olson has the record to back himself up as well...IMO
Why do fans bring up Foster's losses to Frazier and Ali to put him down. Unbelievable. Light Heavy's Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles are not in the same league as those ATG Heavyweights. I pick Foster by UD.
Two of my favorite Lt heavies. Ive always felt that Maxim was one of the most underrated in the division. Both are great technicians but Bob is quicker and a much harder hitter. Foster by UD.
Amazing that this thread got to page 4 before Maxim-Patterson got a mention. Reports suggest Patterson was hard done by but it was a close contest and Floyd was one hell of a puncher. Foster himself was a beautiful puncher and a better than average LH champ but I've never felt he was THAT good. Maxim was also a better than average champ, probably not quite as good as Bob but he might just have the tools to sneak this one.
Foster's jab cut Ali's face to pieces. As in, the Ali who was never marked up by anyone else in his entire career. I can see Foster getting a TKO here.
Okay, he was tearing his face up. That's leaps and bounds beyond what anyone else did to his face. His face was almost impossible to cut and Foster, a Lightheavy, accomplished it.
Actually a pretty interesting matchup at 15 rounds. Foster 6'3"....Maxim 6'1". Maxim fought a lot in the low 180 lb range....small cruiserweight now. I am sure Foster would weigh about the same. Foster vs Charles is a tossup.....Maxim lost to Ezzard and Moore every time. Foster would have to be at the top of his game to assure a win, otherwise Maxim might win one in a trilogy, IMO.
I think Bob is a top 3, 5 light heavyweight, but I think Joey has enough experience to pull off a close win under the right circumstances, and was ranked as a heavy briefly, to it's possible.
