He's beaten the best competition in and around his division consistently and impressively, showing a mix of skills and athleticism few others in boxing possess. He is pound-for-pound material and deserves to be in the top 5. Beating and battering Cintron with an intelligent application of his speed and power, nearly-upsetting Williams in an absolute war as a relative unknown, beating a very game Kelly Pavlik over 12 while overcoming adversity in the mid-rounds, icing Williams in the second with perfect counter overhand left, and dismantling a live underdog and underrated technician in Dzinziruk (just the type of fighter many avoid)... The only fighters with a legacy and recent string of victories that can compete with that kind of resume and display of ability are Hopkins, Pacquiao, Donaire, and Marquez.
To not appreciate what Sergio Martinez has accomplished and done, is to simply not know **** about boxing.
I like him as a fighter but I must admit he has his flaws I thought he lost the first Williams fight he clearly won the early rounds but like Pascal vs Froch he tired after the 5th and stopped throwing with authority and allowed Williams to win the second half of the fight vs Pavlik it was close Martinez went down Pavlik had the momentum then got cut and Martinez turned it up while Kelly couldnt see but Pavlik did very well during the middle rounds Williams 2 he got the KO Dzinzuirk he fought a great fight but stamina showed and he did have to take off a round vs elites taking a round off could be costly however he is top 10 currently i dont have a list but he is up there
who else could he have beaten that would have been more impressive than moving up to middlweight and destroying the undisputed champ in pavlik and and icing williams the ring #5 ranked p4p fighter in the world in one round? the guy's a natural JMW, he's a small ass MW and only moved up to MW for the payday and because none of the names at JMW wanted a piece of him. the only worthy foes at middleweight right now are Pirog and Golovkin....if Williams beats Lara a rubber match would be nice. other than Froch, Martinez has fought the best competition back to back in boxing over the last 3 years. Most avoided man in boxing is Maravilla!
sergio martinez is the message board troll of boxing. -- fights @ 160 but calls out WWs????? if somebody did that on a messageboard you'd say he was trolling. like "haha stop trolling dude that would never happen, that's just crazy talk!" yet sergio does it in real life!! haha. -- closes his eyes, swings wildly, prays to God, and hits paul williams out of luck and then suddenly declares himself P4P KING????? omg if he was on a messageboard u would RED K him for that! -- claims to have beat the man who beat the man when in reality all he ever did was beat the bum who beat the bum. dude "maravilla" is like his screenname and he's this big, giant troll w/ a dynamic IP address destroying boxing with his ridiculous posts.
because he says they're too big for him and his hype train would be derailed badly once he steps in the ring with a Carl Froch or a Andre Ward. Another esb hypejob exposed, this board will never learn
I called him overrated until he punched a hole through Paul Williams' face. I said then I will never call him overrated again. I don't want him to punch me in the face.
The guy is the legit middleweight champion of the world, a weight he has only fought at in the past 2 years of a 10yr plus career. People act like Martinez was picking on smaller guys, Pavlik was a huge middleweight, and probably should have been fighting at super middle or above years ago. And Paul Williams? Paul Williams was one of my favorite fighters for years, because he brought it every time and was fairly humble. But at some point, he bought into all his hype. Paul Williams hasn't fought at Welterweight since like 2008, i don't care what the guy says he can't make 147 anymore. I think he would have a hard time making 154 at this point. Dzinziruk is a career jr. middleweight, like Sergio was (actually sergio started at 147) up until like 3 fights before Dzinziruk. None of the German Middleweights wanted anything to do with him, Sylvester (since defeated) and Sturm would not get near him.
martinez is very good but to put him so high in the p4p rating is a little premature to say the least.he beat a very good fighter in paul williams but that could have been a lucky punch.he is to big for manny but not for mayweather but mayweather would never fight such a dangerous opponent.
What great victories does fmj have ? Mosley looked horrible against mora, and looked the same in his next 2 fights. Jmm gimme a break and he didnt make weight. Maravilla called floyd out at155. Surely floyd can dothat being he fought dlh at 154 years ago. I think he would give mayweather hell with the jab he showed against dzinziruk.
true he is a bit over hype, if he was judged the same way pac or floyd has been criticized they would be surprise to find out that his biggest wins are Kelly Pavlik and Paul williams. 2 Fighters who have no defense, no head movement, flat footed and slow as hell. He is a great fighter but he hasn't beaten anyone who is elite level yet. Anyone who has watch boxing for a long time knows pavlik or williams is not elite. The only way to find out how good martinez really is if he moves up and fights at 168 where the their is a deeper talent pool.
