As timr passes, does Dirrells issues become more legit looking?

If the patient allows it there's nothing hindering a statement and considering the doubts there is about Dirrells honesty on the matter, it would certainly be in his best interest to get such a statement dont you agree?



According to himself Dirrell suffered from dizzyness and siezures(?) months after the AA fight as far as I remember the fightcamp 360. Sounds pretty serious to me. So serious that I would think that it required a very long rest. Was it only a concussion? WHo knows.

It's quite evident that Ken Hershman of Showtime doesnt believe it either as he has done everything he could to make Dirrell persona-non-grata.

If you think your limited, basic sciences training even begins to qualify you to make a clinical diagnosis with something as dynamic as a concussion from observation on the TV...it might be worth putting that ego in check. How did his neurological exam check out? Did you score his MMSE? How about a SCAT or SCAT2 assessment? Cranial nerve exam all checked out? I had a really hard time checking palate deviation...what did you see? Normal pupilary reaction?

Yeah...and of course alllll brain injuries are universal should not be evaluate on a case-by-case basis.:nono

Being a medical student doesn't qualify you for a damn thing, other than being in the privileged position of having to opportunity to learn how to evaluate a patient.

By who? Are you talking about Abraham, his team and a few bitter euros? As far as I can see, the American media hasn't questioned his injuries.

 

Hey Bat, you bring up some great points.

Dirrell may seem like he's speaking from both sides of his mouth:

A) I'm having all these issues
B) Haven't had a doc make a statement regrading them
and then
C) I'm training and sparring

Kind of conflicting right? But if we are doubting his truth about his injury, wouldn't we also be obligated to doubt his truth about his trianing? Maybe he isn't sparring?

He's in a difficult position: if he's suffering from long term effects enough that he can't fight for huge paydays, that's one thing. But coming out and saying "I've got a doctors note here that says I've got this diagnosis" then that changes everything.

Now he'll have to undergo a whole extensive screening process, and it could put a much bigger crimp in his career than just missing a few big pay days. Does that make sense? Better to downplay it and not show up to work until it resolves, than to come out with something that causes you to lose your job all together.

My thoughts are that if he would pass up a huge payday because he's conscientious enough of his health that he knew he wouldn't fare well...then he's also probably conscientious enough that the extent of his full contact training is likely grossly exaggerated.

Bascialy the kid is in the precarious position of having to walk the fine line of truly not feeling okay and not revealing too much so that it puts his career on jeopardy. I expect there are exaggerations on both fronts, but you gotta realize...the brain doesn't grow back like a bone. If his leg was broken, and you could see it mending. This wouldn't be an issue.

But it's such a hard call to make, and considering the young man has had the balls to fight at his level before even 20 professional fights, maybe he's got more going on that being "scared" of a guy (Ward for example) who doesn't pack that much one-punch KO power.

Also, the fact that he is so young, you'd expect some recklessness, and if he's putting the breaks on...I think it's a much bigger deal than folks think. Imagine if you were 26 or so, and someone was offering you in the millions of dollars to "sack up" and fight. 99.9% of us would...even if we felt unprepared. It takes some fortitude to step back and not jump in. And it's not like he was in some brutal war that last fight either...so I doublt he's suddenly guyshy.

Last pice: Ken Hershman. Didn't know who he was, googled him. He's a CEO or something? His opinion means dick. How many times did Al Toon's coach on the Jets get him to "walk it off" and get back in the game? Don't know who Al Toon is....google him. These guys are responding as fans, not medical professionals. He doesn't know all the facts, and even if he did, he probably lacks the training to put them all together and come up with an objective diagnosis..

 

Dirrell had every motive to opt out of the s6. He stood to have a must-win fight against his good friend Andre Ward and he believed he was being underpaid. The chance of him being eliminated from the s6 was clear. In that case he'd stand with 2 losses and a questionable DQ win. He knew that he'd be slapped with a hefty fine if he left the s6 without a legit reason as provided by Taylor and Kessler.

So the motive was there. Clearly.


He IS sparring. He tweeted about it and there has been pictures of his swollen face after tough sparring with Nathan Cleverly.


I think his team calculated that the loss of credibility and relatively big paydays would be the better choice than fight Ward. In the end this is boxing and people have been forgived worse (Margarito getting a giga payday against Pac for example), so they expect Dirrell to fight on one of Showtimes rival networks.

Hershmann is not just another fan but the CEO of Boxing on Showtime and fonder of the s6. He got screwed over and the tournament lost major prestige. He is not a guy you as a fighter would want as an enemy if you can avoid it.


Regarding the concussion issue: American sports doctors are generally much more negligent than their european counterparts. Fighters who has taken a beating usually stays the night in hospital while fighters who gets brutally fouled and experiences full-body siezures gets a check with a flashlight before being told to go home. Dirrell spend no more than a couple of hours in the hospital.
