Sure, rematches with especially Hopkins but also Toney wouldn't have hurt. But they don't belong with the other names mentioned. McLellan, Darius and Benn were big time guys that were around at the same time and he NEVER faced them. That's a much bigger flaw on his record than not shutting up the fan boys of Toney and Hopkins once and for all IMO.

 

I agree. If I had to put them in order in terms of who Jones should have fought:

1. Benn at 168
2. Dariusz at 175
3. McClellan if he stayed healthy
4. Hopkins II
5. Toney II

I have no idea why the Benn fight never materialized. And Hopkins could have gotten the rematch, but only if it was 60/40.

 

Benn, Hopkins, Michalczewski and Liles should have happened. No other fights mattered.

Jones should have fought Benn after the McClellan fight. Not sure what happened either

Jones should have fought Dariusz in '99 or '00 but neither of them wanted to travel.

Jones should have fought Liles around '95, I know for a fact that Liles was offered a 7 figure payday but didn't accept.

Jones should have fought Hopkins in 2002, but Hopkins didn't take the 60/40 split which was totally fair. Hopkins ducked Jones.

 

I'm a huge fan of Roy Jones but I agree there are fights he should have pushed for that never happened.

The three Roy mentioned when I met him were Benn, Calzaghe and Michalczewski. Roy was impressive against Ruiz and Sosa in terms of taking some shots and dominating but it would have been great to see him in with Dariusz, Benn and Calzaghe in his prime.

I also agree there was no need for rematches with Toney and Hopkins who were beaten very soundly. Hopkins refusing to come up to 175 after winning the middleweight tournament did seem like a blatant duck of Jones. 60-40 was perfectly fair.

 

benn and daruisz, would have been decent opponents in roy's prime but neither would have stood much of a chance imo. calzaghe really wasn't known and his name was never mentioned during jones' prime. clinton woods was a more credible opponent in 2002 and jones was given hell for taking that fight. woods turned out to be a pretty decent fighter.

Why not ? he blew his entire career which still looks one of the best.
Jones hurt the readier Sosa , (Reggie) Johnson and Tony Thornton , all of which were very tough , but couldn't legitimately hurt a fluid shocked James Toney .
If Toney wasn't in such a shape , then he stood a good chance at catching Roy somewhere in the fight.
Everyone ignore the obvious opposite : imagine a fresh James Toney taking on a severely drained Jones . Or the best : both ready to fight.

 

bad post as usual. Trinidad was @ his prime vs Hopkins , just a naturally smaller man whose illegal advantage was taken from him.
Toney was not in a shape to fight.
People will never see a fight between Toney and Jones in which both are at their relatively best condition to fight.

 

Toney always dehydrated until he became a "heavy" , but there are differences between the dehydrations he had to go through in each one of his fights.

Also , Roid really didn't "beat" Hopkins in their first fight at all , not to mention it was not with an "utmost ease"

 

The main ones are obviously Eubank and Nunn at light-heavy in '97. Those are the only fights he genuinely didn't want out of fear of loss or not looking good.
