Gooners I am calling it right now. Floyd will put on a Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather type of performance. He will land combos all night. Gatti like performance. Hold me to that.

Everyone gets tired at some stage in a fight.

There are times in Floyd's career where he tries to grab a rest on the ropes, by using his defense to avoid punches, problem here is, his defense might be negated by the southpaw stance, as the power hand will be coming from where he likes to bend to, to avoid punches. Ortiz is a good body puncher to, he brings uppercuts into play and mixing them in with his combos(both hands), he has power, and just generally puts his punches together well in combination when you stand infront of him, although he does stay there too long after landing at times.

Berto didn't choose to slug it out with Ortiz imo. Berto tried to back Ortiz up, and open up his southpaw stance with his aggression, which you sometimes have to do against a left who is counter punching off the backfoot, problem was, Berto comes in fat with his punches, leaves spots for you to counter him inbetween, and because of his chin issues, Ortiz's power, straighter punching, he was able to hurt Berto, and that is how the fight developed into the fire fight it did, Ortiz smelled blood, and so went after him. Almost every-time Berto tried to back Ortiz up, he would get nailed, and it would manifest into a war, cause Ortiz would go after him.

You think if Ortiz gets desperate, and starts falling behind, that the jab is gonna keep him at bay, and the movement is gonna offset him the whole night? I would question that, I think Ortiz will turn it up, force Mayweather to move at a faster pace than he would like, or work at a harder pace than he would like, which could lead to Mayweather having to engage Ortiz more, and that is where this fight might become interesting.

I could see it. It just depends on how good his hands are feeling that night

Ya'll are crazy that say Floyd is going to start a war with Ortiz.

The only way that happens is if Ortiz is completely exhausted in the late rounds of the fight. Considering Ortiz is relatively musclebound, he may gas out early especially if he exhausts himself initially, but even then there is still risk involved.

Ortiz does have some boxing skill for what it's worth and can counter. I see Floyd boxing Ortiz from the outside, and Ortiz playing the role of the aggressor and likely landing nothing of significance.

Floyd's foot movement will be the key to this fight. And he'll be the matador to the bull that will be Ortiz.

It's hard to envision a KO, but considering Mayweather looked huge against Mosley, maybe he'll have reinvigorated power.

Mosley is an old fighter, with aged reflexes, not only was Mayweather able to get close to him, Cotto was able to get close to him, as Mosley cant react when he see's his opportunity's, its easier to utilize your speed get close to a guy that cant pull the trigger.

Mayweather couldn't stop Marquez, I dont know where people are getting this, Mayweather by KO from.

Floyd will keep Ortiz in check and embarrass him, by:
    • Jabbing him
    • Pasting his face with left-hooks
    • Smacking him in the mouth with straight-rights
    • Spoiling him when gets close
    • Countering with uppercuts on the inside
All of Ortiz' strengths will be minimized and discouraged when Floyd does all of the above, and more. Seriously guys, just watch the Peterson fight again, and tell me if Ortiz really has changed since then? Moving up 7 pounds in weight and holding a belt, doesn't automatically mean he's ready for Floyd, or Pac for that matter.

Also, I consider this 'Floyd's legs have one', a myth.

Marquez has skills and is a stone hearted hero. Ortiz isn't quite on that level yet.

I give credit to Ortiz. After his knockout against Maidana, he showed that he had improved boxing ability, notably in his fight against Campbell which wasn't a great fight, but you could tell it was a fighter where Ortiz was taking a step back and relearning the things he may have been taught early in his career.

So, yes Ortiz can counterpunch. At the same time, I don't think that he can outbox Mayweather and if he used the same tactics he used against Campbell, he'll be outboxed to a very wide and boring decision. I just don't think he has the skills to outbox Mayweather.

Ortiz' best chance is probably to employ his size and strength, but even then Mayweather is just as big if not bigger than Ortiz. He also has impeccable defense, and while I understand he could potentially lean into Ortiz' left hands, his reflexes still looked amazing in his fight against Mosley.

You're right that the jab alone won't keep Ortiz at bay, but initially it will be a great punch to control the tempo of the fight, and later when Ortiz gets desperate, it will set up the right hands that will be used to pick Ortiz apart and possibly even hurt him, or at least make him tenative.

I just don't see this as a winnable fight for Ortiz. He doesn't get low enough or have enough size to cause Mayweather problems on the inside, and he can't outbox him.

Honestly, Bradley would have been a better fight.

Its not that he will start a war with him, its what he might be forced to do, to counter the pressure.

Moving at a faster pace than you comfortable with, cause you under pressure, takes more energy. There is a difference between moving around the ring, and being forced around the ring.

Hatton made Floyd fight at a faster pace than he was comfortable with imo, and Hatton got inside at times, problem is, Hatton smothered himself when he got there, could not connect, its only when Hatton started to tire, and the gap between them got bigger, that Mayweather really started to pick him off, but Ortiz's lefty stance, will help him land if he finds his way inside.

Ortiz is more dangerous, offensively inside, than what Hatton was imo, he's more precise, throws straight punches, is more powerful, and just has better variety in the way he puts his punches together.

Really to be honest, this fight is a mismatch. And it's just not that Mayweather is physically better, his style is all wrong for Ortiz as well.

A better fight is Bradley, Pac, or Martinez.

If it's true that this fight is a preclude to Mayweather vs Pac or Martinez, then this is a passable fight, but if it's not and Floyd just goes back into retirement, this is a huge dissapointment.

Marquez is more skilled, but its to do with styles. Marquez's game is based on drawing you into mid range, then when you attack that space, he will start his offense(counters), but when you stay on the periphery of that range, and can connect cause you have a greater reach, you're able to pick and poke at him from out of range, and shut him down offensively, that's why Mayweather was able to neutralize JMM, not to mention, JMM did not acclimatize to the weight very well, he was bloated and slow.

I dont think he does either to be honest. Ortiz seems to be a guy that needs you to engage him, but I just worry for Mayweather, that if Ortiz applies pressure, whether Mayweather's legs, jab, long range game, will be enough to keep him out.

Floyd is big for the weight these days, granted, but he's still not particularly powerful imo.

IMO, you might be being a bit blase if you dont think Ortiz's southpaw stance will be a significant factor if Floyd tries to go into his shoulder roll.

I question whether getting low against Floyd would work. When you get low, and you try to do what Bradley does to protect himself, which is use perpetual head-movement, it could potentially invite Floyd to do what Jones was able to do to negate Toney's shell defense, to get off first whilst he's in the crouch, land himself on the other side of you, where by you cant counter out of the crouch, as he's on the wrong side of you.

Floyd will not go into his shoulder roll until he is on the inside which the Southpaw stance will not be effective at all against him on the inside. Ortiz will throw on the inside to be throwing. Floyd will throw on the inside at certain targets like the liver. He is going to make his shots matter. Floyd will show movement in this fight on the outside and we will see that quick left hook from the Pretty Boy Floyd days. :deal

The shoulder roll is used to combat the right hand, and the left hook. You roll with the right, and either bend under the hook, or you catch it on the right glove which is protecting your chin, and because most fighters throw in a certain sequence, to where their weight is distributed, its easier to anticipate what punch is coming next, like if someone throws a right hand, their weight is distributed on the left leg, therefore majority of fighters will look to follow up with a left hook, as that is where their weight is distributed, now you rinse and repeat this, add a lot of experience, it can be impenetrable, which Mayweather is against conventional fighters, but the whole dynamic changes against a southpaw, and Ortiz isn't just a southpaw, he actually puts his punches together well when inside, has a good body attack, and can bang.

Mayweather thinks he can get close to Ortiz, he's making a mistake imo.

Floyd is going to walk him down just like he's done every southpaw...He could very well get knocked out..or he could embarrass Ortiz and stop him.
