Nothing. He's cheaper for HBO who calls the shots. Martinez IS pretty popular in the Latino market and has GREAT marketing potential since he's exciting, charismatic and fears no one. Only those holding the key for his very PPV breakthrough (Chavez, Cotto, Margarito, Angulo, Pac, Floyd etc) don't want to make Martinez a PPV attraction on their expense so no well known opponent is left. And what does HBO do? Look around to the Pirogs, Barkers and Geale's and picks the cheapest. Martinez has nothing to do with that. If HBO wanted to make Pirog a regular they would've called him back, they didn't. It's very sad, but apparently no one is willing to pay for Martinez-Pirog, not US TV, not Russian not a Dubai billionaire. Yes if Martinez was fighting under Top Rank all the doors would open but Arum turned him down back in the day and now that he beat the **** out of his fighter Pavlik, he's keeping Sergio faaaaaaaaar away. So Martinez is struck with a promoter HBO and rivals don't respect, a TV that rather builds the Bertos, Canelos and Chavez' but not Maravilla with great potential, rivals that would not give him his PPV breakthough and organizations that bend their own rules for more sanctioning fees. Martinez' division is just too international for HBO to invest in these unknown rivals and Sergio is paying the price. I only ask not to blame him but those responsible for the situation.
does pac not hold a belt at jnr middleweight? a weight which martinez has been fighting in until recently i for 1 would love to see pac or mayweather vs martinez
Very well put. With the plethora of information available to us now it is a shame that we only use it to make ourselves more ignorant.
You'd like to see him vs Cotto? I assume that's because you think he's real competition. Yet Pacquiao hasn't fought real competition in years? ...... OH HANG ON A SEC
he'd better fight ward, froch, bute, steiglitz, pirog, bundrage or cotto. REMATCH WITH MARGO SEEMS GOOD FOR HIM!
base on what? Tell me his accomplishments Their is nothing floyd or pac should be ashame if they were to compare their resume/achievements with martinez. Just like LBJ said: Check my stats:yep
Pac is a small guy but he won a jr middleweight title didn't he? How come he's too small for Martinez but not to small for Margarito who was 165lbs in the ring against Pac? Floyd did fight somebody who was 2 divisions below him and Pac is gonna do it too in the 3rd fight against JMM. You're too emotional and it's affecting your logic.
I feel ya, dawg. But it makes me wonder, were the likes of GBP not interested in signing him when the Di Bella contract came to an end?
Doesnt PAC have a belt at that weight?? And martinez agreed to drop weight and meet him half way.......... ? And wasnt margarito bigger then martinez?? dnt get it twisted the size wont be problem for PAC the fact that this is not an old over the hill fighter is the problem
Honestly what could Golden Boy really offer him? Grandpa Winky? He's not getting a piece of Canelo no matter where he signs. Top Rank has more guys that could theoretically fight him, but there too I don't necessarily think his position would be much better than it is now. Cotto-Margarito would still be a higher priority than any fight with Martinez, and Chavez would still be protected. Look at Gamboa; he too isn't a huge draw, and he too was kept away from the company's cash cow in his division. This idea that Martinez would suddenly become a big PPV star if he was with another promoter just strikes me as really inaccurate. There are only two PPV stars in boxing today, and both only got that status by beating the biggest PPV star of the previous generation. Martinez doesn't even have a natural boxing-following fan base. He may be exciting, he may put on great fights, and he may have good looks, but I'm seriously skeptical his position would be much better than it is now if he was with a bigger promotional company.
Golden Boy is almost exclusively interested in American and Mexican prospects. They have just a very few 'outsiders' and not doing much with them outside of Khan, who was built up in a different country by a different promoter. Promoters not signing Martinez 6 or 7 years ago is absolutely madness, he was the same great guy with an exciting skilled style, no nonsense mentality and humanity outside of the ring. He also had an Argentinean passport which was as good a deal breaker. But look at him now, World MW Champ, P4P#2, Fighter of the Year and solid ratings on the verge of becoming truly big, yet still not much love for him by boxing powers incl. HBO. I mean if he was boring. Or a cherry picker. Or injury prone. Op pizza faced. But he's not, he's everything you want in a fighter so I wonder WTF is the problem.
