The point he made (in a rather blunt way) was that the actions of a very small number of people reflect poorly on the whole and give them a bad rep. I agree. People like the OP are the REASON there's folks running around trying to start **** with any gay person they can find. On this note I have to disagree with you. Some people will be homophobes and try to start **** with any gay man they see regardless. When they give you solid self defence advice, you tell them they don't know what theyr'e talking about. People are 'giving me grief' because of something called group polarization -- if you notice the people that did say I reacted correctly only posted once or twice, whereas the keyboard-warriors...different story. But Amin let me put you in a similar situation...are you or your family Muslim? For arguments sake let's assume they are.... Suppose you're eating at a table with your mother and grandmother at a restaurant, now some bigoted thugs from across the room are bothered by two things; you guys speaking Arabic, and your mother & grandmother wearing hijabs. Now one of the thugs comes up to the table and tells you to "Get the **** out", you notice the two workers at the restaurant are doing nothing and the guy is two feet from your face (and a few feet from your family). What would YOU do??? Here's some advice you'd have been given here: Since some of these idiots have never left their parent's basement, they don't understand that calling the police doesn't mean the police arrive in 25 seconds. They also don't understand that trying to walk away may just result in being followed and hit from behind. So tell me Amin, would you consider the above "solid self-defense advice", or would you tell them they're all ****ing idiots? A few things. First off, I'm an atheist, but we can still stick to the above scenario. Secondly, with my mother and grandmother there, even if there was a 1% chance they would get hit accidentally, or whatever, I would have gotten the **** out. Their safety (well, just my mother in this case, both my grandmothers are dead, RIP) is infinitely more important to me than my pride. I don't need to show off in front of my mom. In the immortal words of Milton, my mom thinks I'm cool. That said, if it was just me, it would be a different story. First of all, you need to know how to deal with bullies. These guy in your example. He feels brave. He sees a visible minority, and thinks he can big himself up. He'll walk up, do his blustery bull****. If he sees any hesitation in his target, he'll continue with his bs. However, when he sees that the person he's picking on isn't a victim, he'll back down, real quick. I'm not a big guy, but I don't avert my gaze either. I'd stare right through until he either backed down or started throwing punches. Either way, he'd lose. If he's lucky, he'll back down. To summarize, with my family, or female friends, or anyone who can't really defend themselves, I'll swallow my pride and GTFO. If it's just me, different story. Nobody here is telling you to be a *****, they're telling you to think about the safety of your friends. Street fights are random, and often end quite badly for one side.
