Yepper...... PLUS! Oscar was a PPV star beginning in 1995 with his KO over Raf Ruelas... From there onward his fights / PPV sales were huge until he washed up at a limp 144 against Pac-Man in 2008....

Royale "With Cheese" Jones was a PPV flop on the whole.... He never came close to banking the bucks Team DLH banked...

Who did Jones avoid ? and dont say Dariusz Michaelczowski who would never fight in the states .. Jones avoided nobody, his weight dictated that he fought at 175, and at 175 there was nobody that could compete .. thats not rare, look at Holmes and Tyson at Heavy, or Mayweather at 147 .. Sometimes the competition just isnt up to scratch, that shouldnt denigrate the champion in that division, its just an era thing .. If Oscar had dominated Quartey, Whitaker and Trinidad then this conversation might be different but he didnt .. I had him losing all of these 'defining' fights

people say that so and so dodged so and so when in fact a lot of the time it is simply boxing politics that gets in the way of the fight materialising,

very dumb of those that do this

How does PPV sales define a great fighter ?? Oscar was a teeny bopper dream. with millions of teenage girls screaming with delight whenever he showed up .. Thats got nothing to do with boxing, and nothing to do with Jones, Oscar had a different market. Talent wise, Oscar wasnt in the same league as Jones, Oscar wasnt in the same league as countless fighters in the last 30 years .. He was a very good fighter who had a 'specific' market appeal, that doesnt mean that hes better than anybody, let alone a better fighter than Jones .... Jones couldnt do numbers on PPV because he was so good nobody envisaged he would lose a round let alone lose a fight, Jones never captured a mass market appeal like the cheesey Oscar did .. Jones will go down in history as the greatest natural talent of all time, Oscar will go down in history as a very good fighter who got beat by other great fighters and who edged out guys who probably should have got the decision against him .... Jones v Oscar is a no contest talent wise ...... Jones is the greatest p4p fighter since Ray Leonard

Interesting Jones wanted to come down to 160-168 to face DLH and Tito. He knew they were easy fights and big money

Factoring in h2h makes jones a clear favourite by a mile.

I mean, maybe it's just me, but should h2h, manner of victory etc be of any benefit in a ranking system?

My view is not because we can never prove it. We don't know who actually does beat who in fantasy matchups.

I agree that words like duck and dodging are not called for. I believe regardless of blame, if key fights are missed, it should be held against them. Then again charles never fought lesnevic so I dunno. And ofcourse there's the obvious champ who didn't face the obvious contender but i'm not bringing that up for fear of ruining the thread.

I'm still open to changing my mind.

Most folks don't consider Ali's bouts after Spinks 2, by which time he should have been long gone.

Similarly, Jones should have hung them up after Ruiz. Or, at latest, Tarver 1.

At that point, he was essentially undefeated. (One DQ, brutally avenged ).

His record up to there, 15 years, 35 years old, belts from MW to HW, scalps that included Hopkins, Toney, Hill, Ruiz, McCallum and Griffin, rarely losing a round.

Add the (stolen) Olympic gold, and you have a clearly better resume than Oscar.

I give a damn what some of these whiney 'lil bitches think here.... DLH is greater all around the block people.... DLH has the gold medal, had the PPV ability, fought the best of several divisions, won his world titles, runs his own company and is a financial gold mine today.....

Oscar De La Hoya cannot go into a shopping mall without being swarmed by the media, meanwhile nobody recognizes Roy Jones standing in line at Burger King unless Roy himself promotes his entrance into the building which he and his ego do all the time.....

DLH has the star quality Jones only wishes he truly had....

NOW! I can give a flying **** if Jones had better speed---SO WHAT!? DLH had a better jab....

Myself, I'll take DLH's legacy and money over anything Jones has to offer in 2011.....

    'Nuff said....:bbb:hi:

Clearly Jones IMO. He beat 2 ATGs in their prime or near prime, went from MW to beating a HW belt-holder (first time for a century), and was so dominant in his victories over journeymen and even good contenders, rarely losing a round. Fighter of the Decade for the 90s.

Oscar was great but not at that level.

So, Jones is greater than DLH.?.? Hmmmmm....:rofl

    Jones' claim to fame is:

    Jones W 12 Toney of '94.... Toney weight-drained severely...:yep

Jones KO 4 Hill of '98..... Hill already on the decline, but the body shot was great...
    :good

Jones TKO's Vinny Paz in '95.... Paz way outta his league...:deal

Montell Griffin and Eric Harding.... Good guys, but nothing special...:-((

John Ruiz of 2003.... Again, weakened from the contracted weight and just too slow and passive....
    :bbb
Tony Tarver of 2003..... Jones gets a friendly decision.....:hi:

    Note:

Come 2004, Roy Jones' career goes to hell.....:admin

ruiz did not have a contracted weight. it was an effing heavyweight title fight. you need to post on the current boxing forum with the others that make up things about fighters. you've posted two of the dumbest things i've read in classic in two consecutive days. ok, we get it. you don't like jones.

Bull****......... Ruiz had a contract from Jones' team that said Ruiz had to be near or below 230 pounds..... Ruiz was forced to either dry-out leading up to the fight or have his calorie intake adjusted...... You best check the record my man.... Ruiz was not allowed to weigh over a certain / precise weight.... I think 230 was the target....? Ruiz came in at 226 and Jones was 193 according to Boxrec......
