I always tell people if my ***** wasn't so big I'd make bantam. But they've seen me under the shower so they know I'm joking :|
I'm 5'9" and fight at light welter, I'm not even tall at the weight as I fought the jolly green giant well over 6 feet at 140.
It protects the hand much better and creates a sturdier fist.
If you want advice ask your trainer, the internet is useful if you want opinions.

You should learn to fight before concerning yourself with weight. Get in good fighting shape while doing so, and see where you end up.
Only did it once, but I had weight issues so could not take days off.
