Why did you even bother specifying that you think my biases have to do with where people are from, if it isn't relevant in this particular topic? :huh

You are missing the point as well. To call any fighter a garbage is ridiculous.

Well, you may be right in this case. Cintron was there to lose and collect a pay check. He probably hoped he could win though. I see this to often with the local, Billy Lyle. After he beat Duddy he became a respectable opponent at 160 even though he SHOULD be fighting at WW but doesn't want to cut from his walk around weight at JMW feeling he loses too much. Bouts above WW may not be fair to judge him on.

IB, you're forgetting the win Cintron had over Teddy Reid on the way up! How dare you!

(Sorry...had to play Devil's Advocate for a moment)

    ...except maybe ones that are?

On its face, the very act of getting in the no man's land of the squared circle puts anybody in the top percentile of bad mother****ers on this planet and commands immediate respect. That's more of a guideline than a rule, though.

Boxers can forfeit their right to that immediate respect by their behaviors once in the ring.

Case in point: does Julio David Roque Ler deserve respect for stepping into the ring with Jorge Arce, only to turn tail and run? (openly mocking both the paying audience and Arce himself, and worst of all making a mockery of the SWEET SCIENCE itself and its competitive spirit?)

    Of course not.

Yeah, he stepped in there with a tough action hero with a punch. That isn't the end of the story, though. His subsequent behaviors forfeited the respect that initial act earned him.

    Same with Cintron.

Yeah, he got in with Margarito - then folded under the pressure. Both times.

He got in with Martinez, and wanted out from very early on. He had to be encouraged to stick it out (because his handlers probably knew the deal, that he only had to see the final bell to escape without a loss).

He got in with Williams, and after testing the waters he got RIGHT the **** back out.

He got in with Molina and by the halfway point was acting like a beaten man with that wild pleading look in his eyes.

He got in with Alvarez and already had that look in his eyes during the RING WALK.

You know what's scary, though? This probably is one of his better wins. And it came against a guy who was a hard punching, but painfully limited junior welterweight. It's also a satisfactory zult 'cause Reid always came off as being a bit of a douche, but that's another story.

Cintron's hype always seemed disproportionally large when compared to his talent, but I think the reason why he grinds everyone's gears is just how much of a head-case he really is. He was a guy who would occasionally show some grit (coming from behind to stop Ouali, coming back from some rough moments to stop Estrada, and scoring the upset nod over Angulo when everyone had written him off), and then immediately follow it up with a performance that left everyone shaking their heads.

Might have been more tolerable had he simply remained a contender, but as I said, the hype, and the tendency to overblow the significance of the occasional highlight reel KO meant that he was placed into high profile fights that he usually hadn't earned. And that seems to the spouting point for the geyser of venom that you've directed toward him.

Either way, Canelo's done with him, and we'll probably be treated to watching Cintron get served up to prospects coming up for the rest of his career.

While there's absolutely no reasonable way I think he lost the Smith fight (seriously IB...Smith didn't win that fight by SCREAMING during every punch), I agree with everything else you said.

IB, I think you sometimes go just a bit overboard dissing fighters who you deem overrated and over-hyped by irritating fans. I'm surprised someone who loves the sport as much as you do would call someone who steps into the ring "garbage." I'm not disagreeing with your assessment of Cintron's much-less-than-elite abilities as a fighter, but he's a man that consistently walked into the ring opposite another man and put his life on the line for all to see. "Garbage" is not something fighters should be called, except for the most extreme cases of moral or athletically-oriented violations.

I think showing up at welterweight drawn and weak would be tantamount to sticking his neck out and asking to be KTFO at this point.

It isn't like he's terribly elusive anymore, either. Someone like a Zaveck would get to him and smash him to bits.

There's no salvaging a career as a top contender at this point, at any weight. It's gate-keeping or retirement.

You're right...it isn't and I hate to do so, but it's frustrating to see someone constantly having excuses and promises made on their behalf when it couldn't be any more obvious that they're just plain rubbish as a fighter. So many are in denial. Some people just aren't very good at certain things. Doing it takes a certain amount of character. Repeatedly failing (and at times seeming to not even really try) doesn't reflect as well on someone's character, though. He tried boxing, starting late. Good for him. He never got very good at it, and never will. (yet he's had more big paydays and chances to swim in the deep end than anybody of his actual talent & skill level - and keeps sinking like a rock without even attempting to paddle)

In reality Kermit isn't any better than a club fighter. He can destroy the Walter Matthysses of the world, but that's about it. "The Killer" just ain't no killer at all.

FFS dude, there were people picking him over Canelo. Seriously picking him. Sure, some of them were probably just Canelo haters thinking wishfully - but a few people seemed to really believe it. After everything up until now. After all the evidence that Cintron even at his best didn't belong in the ring with a Canelo (or, in hindsight - with a then little-known Maravilla...or even Margarito) - let alone now that he's lost a step or three.

Everybody agrees that he declined. The question is where he started and where he finished up. He went from "average" to "horrible". Some people still seem to think he went from "very good, potentially great" to "still decent, potentially good". :-(
