Consensus is that Ali pretended to be hurt and then worked a spot with the ref where he pretended to be angry at him and even chased the ref to entertain the crowd. Old Elmo, who was a good worker himself, used that moment to get himself over for the next 30 years. claiming to have hurt Ali, then knocked him out. Personally, I love it. Ali gave a lot of fall guys a moment of feel good glory and never minded it. He did the same with a 70's heavy from Abilene named Verlee Price who talked about meeting Ali and getting to work out with him as the most inspirational moment of his life to everyone he met too. Heck, even the man in my avatar, Roughhouse Fischer got to do an exhibition with Ali and got christened "The White Acorn" by him.
