Éder Jofre - Lineal Featherweight Championship

As far as I remember, Jofre was stripped of the title by the WBC for failure to defend against Alfredo Marcano. Caracas may have won a purse bid because Jofre refused because he just didn't want to leave Brazil. The WBC then matched Marcano with Bobby Chacon, which took place in L.A. and won by Chacon on a 9th round KO.

 

Well, I would agree. However, in this case Jofre only had WBC recognition, so without that recognition his reign ended there. It was a decent stretch going from Winstone to Legra to Famechon back to Saldivar to Shibata to Sanchez back to Legra and then to Jofre. I'll look into a more explained reason for his stripping of the title but I know it was for refusing to fight Marcano. I believe Ernesto Marcel had WBA recognition at this time.

 

As long as we’re on the conversation, does anybody else think Legra might have deserved the decision? Been many years since I’ve seen it but I do remember thinking it felt like it should have gone the other way. Don’t remember what my scorecard was.

His dad died shortly after the Saldivar fight and he was absolutely crushed and in no frame of mind to fight. His dad had been sick during that fight too.

 

Sal, I scored it 142-142 a draw and noted that these rounds were very close. So a tough one to say.

 

The story on Jofre v Marcano:

Apparently, negotiations for this bout was carrying on and on. WBC president Ramon Velasquez was getting fed up and Jose Sulaiman, who was then WBC secretary stated this fight should have been signed by Feb. 28th '74 and should take place by April 21st. The WBC then granted several concessions to Jofre, which delayed things even more. Until finally giving a deadline to get this signed, with the promoter with the highest bid by June 15th. I had heard Venezuela had the highest bid but Jofre still balked about going to Venezuela and on June 17th the WBC stripped him of his title for failure to defend. On June 22nd, the WBC announced the Alfredo Marcano v Bobby Chacon bout for the vacant title with bids won by the Olympic Boxing Club in L.A. with the bout to take place on August 3rd. Again, a rescheduling as Chacon needed extra time to allow an injured hand to heal and the bout finally took place on September 7th.

 

Just to tie up loose ends, I searched for my scorecard and initially scored it 143-142 Legra, but then you told me about the point deduction from Legra I hadn’t noticed, making my card the same as yours, 142-142.

 

My knowledge is pretty limited to the Heavyweights, but I’ll see if any of my magazines cover this issue.
