I do not follow boxing below Light welterweight. For more distant history I really don't know much below Middleweight.

But taking a foggy look at it Jofre stepped down to fight a lower level of competition and only fought 1 more 12 rounder. After losing the WBC belt he fought 3 years and never lost. So even if he kept recognition his lineage was going to end regardless. If someone beat him you could continue tracing the lineage but you couldn't. In that way it "fizzled out" seems like an accurate way to describe it.

It doesn't happen much anymore and it happens even less to reigning champs but retiring from front line competition is a thing. This was often geography related. Maybe a fighter is done travelling and if big fights don't come to them then they won't happen. Looking at this situation Jofre almost never left Brazil, Marcel almost never left Panama and Marcano almost never left Venezeula. At some point somethings got to give there.

American dominance really spared HW from dealing with this issue but in divisions where all the top fighters are from different countrys things could get very messy. Who goes where?

So Fury's case is kinda similar - vacated all the belts as he couldn't defend him, got his license revoked, claimed retirement a few times, was out for over 2 years and fought obscure opposition when he came back. He also lost The Ring recognition in Feb 2018.

If Fury hadn't returned his claim would have fizzled out.

Ring stripping the lineal champ doesn't replace the lineage until theres a new champ. Fury had 2 layup defenses before Wilder but it would have taken a lot for someone else to take the lineage without beating Fury. At LHW Michalczewski won the lineal title in mid 1997 and had the Ring recognize Roy Jones in late 2001. For that to happen it took Michalczewski to have 10 defenses where 3 were solid defenses while RJJ had 9 or 10 solid defenses out of 11. Thats quite an overwhelming case. The Ring was restarting titles they hadn't done in awhile and otherwise they would have named RJJ earlier. But how much earlier? What would it have taken?

I don't know the context of whose who at Featherweight but looking at Jofres last 10 fights after Legra on boxrec I think it exceeds the "Michalczewski test" by a great deal.

That's true, but there were multiple points in history where number 1 vs number 3 fight created a new lineage and AJ vs Parker was such fight. Fury didn't sign a fight until 2 months later. Co the winner could have at least a claim. With Michalczewski, I think Ring magazine admitted they messed up.

My question is: wouldn't Fury's claim had even more arguments that it fizzled out between 2016 and 2018.
