A pair of bantamweight prospects each sporting a single defeat headline a Golden Boy on ESPN2 card Thursday night. Negrete, originally from Colombia, moved up to 122lbs to challenge Rey Vargas last December and lost a very wide decision. No great shame there. Franco suffered his own incipient pro loss this past May, when he dropped Argentine banger Lucas Emanuel Fernández Leone early but was ultimately stopped in the ninth round. Leone went on to challenge Gideon Buthelezi for the IBO super flyweight title and nicked a few rounds off him in South Africa, buzzing him late. So no great shame there either.
Oct. 4 At Costa Mesa, Calif. (ESPN2/ESPN Deporte) Might be lesser caliber, but at least its "live" boxing. Oscar Negrete vs. Joshua Franco, 10 rounds, bantamweights
