Even more of a deathwish is failing to keep your right glove up at home defensively when the southpaw in question makes liberal use of a powerful frontfoot right hook. That punch is what did Exner in, not exclusively, but did the most damage IMO.

 

Timofey Mikhailovich Kostylev vs. Gennady Gennadievich Shumarov, 4 rounds @ middleweight

 

Argh, hate when they do this...combatants similar enough in height and skin tone both wearing idential trunks (blue, white trim). Kostylev has stripes going down his outer thigh, and Shumarov has more of a beard grown in...or, more of a five-o-clock shadow. Oh, and bright neon yellow shoes, that helps.

 

Both making their pro debuts...and both spat out their gum shields in Round One.

 

IB funfact: we are 92 days away from the sixteenth anniversary of another "Gennady Gennadievich" making his professional debut, also in a middleweight 4-rounder.

 

Weird they put this on the main card, with their combined null experience, but put the only championship bout on the marquee (Solonin vs. Antil for the WBA's vacant Asian light heavyweight title) on the Боец TV prelims.

Not a bad tilt so far, just...weird booking choice.

 

A little hors d'œuvre for between fights (although I'd recommend waiting until after this one in progress, because these rookies are slinging BOMBS at each other)

Haven't been scoring this one, just enjoying it. They've been hurt numerous times each, and keep spitting their mouthpieces out.

 

The crowd is showing both these guys a lot of love, and they're responding to it...anytime someone gets stunned even slightly they are spurred on by urgent cheers and shouts, and frantic brawling erupts.

 

Kostylev has a fat lip and blood oozing from his mouth. Shumarov nary a scratch on him.

Not that scoring ought to necessarily follow visible damage, but I have a feeling the Stary Oskol man incidentally did also get the (slight) overall better of things and should get the nod.

 

They score it a ничья (draw).

Both fighters shrug contentedly as their hands are raised and share a sportsmanlike hug.
