No. Canelo tried to make voluntary defenses against Jermall and Spence. Had Jermall dominated elder Benavidez perhaps he would've been meaningfuly ranked. Didnt happen that way.

Munguia is the next best fight Canelo can make.

And taking voluntary defenses is absolutely fine. Otherwise a fighter is basically a slave to the belt orgs and fights mandatory after mandatory. Most of those rankings are HORRIBLE. Terrence Crawford isnt even ranked by the IBF who stripped Bud. These belt orgs are a complete joke...and theyre trying to add a 5th belt org...and another HW weight class XD XD XD

 

It isn't about proving yourself but defending a title against the number 1 mandatory. Why call yourself the champ of xyz belt but you keep on fighting guys that have never even fought at the weight class for the belt. The blame also goes with the corrupt org too. If these orgs actually follow their rules we wouldn't have these decade long drawn out fights

The price of gingerness.

 

Amd likewise Benavidez has been Canelos mandatory for 1 year. Half the time Fury and Usyk was being called for, and a huge amount of time shy of when Bivol and Beterbiev or Crawford Spence should have happened. All those guys at 135-140 have been tiptoeing around each other for longer than a year as well. What makes Canelo Benavidez not happening in a year more appalling than any of those many scenarios also happening in real time?

 

You really hit the nail on the head there with your terminology.

It is appalling when the champ doesn't fight his top contender.

Atleast in the divisions I listed the fights are happening next, but for whatever reason, Canelo isn't willing to face his top contender next.

 

Because they all sat on their fights much longer. Canelo Benavidez is literally and figuratively the newest fight on the list, yet has the most desperation behind it. That's strange and this is coming from someone who'd like to see the Benavidez fight as much as the next guy.

 

Of course it has the most desperation, because the other fights are happening.

What would be strange would be someone trying to justify this fight not happening yet because other fights didn't happen straight away.

A champion should always face his best challenger. That's what we all want Canelo to do.

 

If he feels he doesn't need to "prove himself" anymore against ranked contenders then he should retire.

 

Let's get this out of the way...pro boxing is not really a true sport. It's prize fighting.

If it were a true sport, Canelo would have to fight number one contenders and forget the catch weight and hydration clause silliness.

As a prize fighter, Canelo can continue to fight whoever he wants and his adoring fans will continue to pay for it.

He's hugely popular amongst Mexicans and there a lot of Mexican boxing fans.

He generates money for the boxing ecosystem including the sanctioning bodies, referees and judges.

This only makes sense if you give in to the fact the pro boxing is not really a legitimate sport. If it ever was, it is not one today.

Think of it as a legitimate sport and you will always be frustrated.

People have been calling for that fight for almost 3 years. Nobody wanted to see Canelo fight nobody Bivol and old GGG. Canelo knows Benavidez can't stay at 168 much longer so to pretend there is no rush is ridiculous. Its been 3 years. Canelo chose Mungia and Charlo he clearly does not want to fight David.

 

I think the point is that hes not getting easy touches but people just keep discrediting him. I used to hate on him but when you look at his resume with no bias it destroys Crawfords, Lomas and pretty much anybody elses in the sport today.
