I miss “Big” Bob, always seemed like a nice guy. If he had the right trainer and good management, do you think he could have accomplished more in his career, or do you think he reached his ceiling regardless of who trained/managed him?
I would suggest he reached his level. He won the Australian heavyweight title, and travelled the world plying his trade both as fighter and sparring partner, so had a good life from the sport, although had tendency to make excuses on many occasions when he lost.
So you don’t think that if he had a trainer like a Steward for example who would keep him in top shape and maximize his strengths that he could have achieved greater? Also, what do you suggest his greatest strengths and weaknesses to be?
Any fighter be they a ATG world champion or a national champion like Mirovic would likely gain from having Steward on their team, he was a boxing oracle, a ATG trainer. I have only actually seen Mirovic fight against the 2 Brits Williams and Skelton, and film of the one round loss he had to Leapi, any other info i have learned is from fight reports etc. Mirovic was a big unit and a warrior, turning down no challenge, those qualities all were his strengths and on show against Williams and enabled him to actually be leading Williams in the Commonwealth title fight before his stoppage loss. Perhaps if Mirovic had a wiser corner they would have told him to stay down until the effects of Williams low blow had receded somewhat, as the fight turned soon after that incident, as up to that point Williams was gun shy for sure. So yes your point about Steward might play out as he sure as hell would have got Mirovic to buy some time to recover. Now if a wise head like Steward could have formulated a plan for Mirovic to beat Valuev, then who knows what fights Mirovic might have got late in his career, and indeed a more disciplined Mirovic might well have enhanced his career too. It was not good seeing Leapi pole axing a 44yr old Mirovic but as said Bob is a warrior. Mirovic 3 times Australian champion, loved by his nation and making a success of post fight career, sounds mighty good to me, never the worlds best but always gave his best in a fight.
I agree. Always gave his best and a compelling character. As we saw him, I think Mirovic more or less hit his ceiling for potential - of course some scope for improvement with the very best trainer(s) but likely with negligible manifest improvements. The Leapai KO was brutal but Mirovic did courageously fight his way out of and recover from the first KD using his accrued experience and savvy - but it virtually took just one later shot to put him out for good before the first round ended - too old at 44 yo for sure - the loss of previous resilience a significant feature. Bob had several losses leading into the Leapai KO loss, - including the losses to the likes of former NRL player John Hopoate that were just as bad to see - clear indications that Mirovic was fighting well beyond his former viabilities. Poor old Bob, always looked a lot older than he was, appeared closer to 60 when he was only 44.
Anybody know where one can get access to more Bob Mirovic fights? Not a lot on YouTube that are good quality. Thanks.
