Saunders’s jab was a power punch in itself. 10-20 years from now when The Ring features Lemieux in a Best I Faced, he’ll probably give Saunders credit for the best jab.
Lem is confusing keeping good distance control with running away. BJS engaged plenty (look at the state of Lem's face) but was so slick the way he moved in and out and avoided being cut off at any point. Lem is obviously a crude puncher but he is very dangerous nonetheless. I honestly think outside of Loma that was the best pure boxing performance this year.
I noticed the same thing. Lemieux really is a sore loser. I don’t understand why fighters talk so much smack before the fight. It makes having to eat crow that much more difficult. The only hell Lemieux gave Saunders might be the jet lag he suffers when he flies back to the UK.
Best display of pure boxing by a British boxer by far this year and one of the best displays by any boxer period. Quite literally punch perfect and a good watch to boot, as when BJS saw openings he was landing some sharp counters and genuinely stunned Lemmy on a few occasions. British boxing pride restored after the Degale debacle.
Some really great posts on this thread, fair play. My favourite bit was in round 5 when he slipped a huge shot from Lemieux then looked out to the crowd to see where it landed. It was a master class performance. My personal opinion as always been that Billy has the potential to be a P4P top ten fighter. The only thing holding him back was his attitude and resulting fitness. He does have decent power, he just doesn’t plant his feet. I can’t remember the round but Billy buzzed him and he could have finished him there and then but Dominic Ingle told him to hang back. Finally, we all enjoy a good slug fest but that’s fighting, not boxing. Hit and not be hit.
If all he did was run, then bad ! But he ran, and frequently for brief bursts, engaged Lemieux, laying the most significant punishment of the fight on the loser. The state of the opponent's face is not always the best measure of how the fight went, but more often than not , it is. Definitely so in this instance. It was a masterclass and a very decisive victory. And I was cheering for Lemieux.
Well it's boxing, how can there be boxing if you're running? What is the other guy runs too, then you're both running away from each other? There's a difference between fighting on the backfoot vs outright trying to minimise the action in there. Hit and not get hit, the emphasis is to hit, but not get hit whilst doing it. If all youre doing is running and not much hitting, thus stopping the other guy from doing much hitting too, well you should be in a ballet class.
I find it hilarious how a pro level boxer can turn around and call that "running". BJS understands the sweet science. It's a pleasure to watch and I wish people could appreciate it more.
boxing is always about hitting, like basketball is about shooting. the points are earned when they get good hits and all others are just for strategy and self-preservation. since boxing is a sport of hitting, too much running and holding are not legal. as with so much evasion to not make a fight when there is only 3 minutes per round. there is a time limit when both players are not engaging to make a fight like in basketball there's time limit to shoot the ball during a teams possession. the referee is very critical in making a good fight to impose all the necessary rules. it's not just about hitting and not getting hit. too many defensive players at the top have influenced the refereeing that made the sport not fun to watch nowadays.
Canelo bitched and moaned about Floyd and Lara(still does) but he was happy to back up vs Trout and Golovkin.
