It was recently released and is a comprehensive 90 minute documentary featuring never before seen footage including interviews from the man himself a few years before he passed. It covers not only his boxing career but his music career and post boxing life. Foreman, Witherspoon, Holmes, Lyle and other figures around that time also speak of their praise for him. Ali is also portrayed fairly both in a positive and negative light. A great look into Joe and even has information I never knew such as his strained relationship with one of his sons.
Ali was the greatest heavyweight of all time, but as a man? I'd rather row a sinking Jon boat with Frazier as ride in a yacht with Ali.
Thanks so much for the heads-up on this documentary--definitely have to check it out! "Smokin Joe" is one of my all-time favorites--a classy, humble man who had the biggest heart of anyone who ever stepped in a ring!! (And a GREAT fighter--absolutely a top-10 all time HW in my book!!)

It's a good documentary that I watched last night. There is some interesting information about his family background, development of his left hand, health issues, hobbies, relationships with other people... Yank Durham's dead, who wasn't just his trainer but also a kind of a father figure, might inspired the Rocky movies too (as well as his work in the slaughterhouse) ... I didn't know that about Hector Frazier... But on the flip side, it was another documentary that focused a little too much on the Ali fights. Of course, these were great fights and a legendary rivalry but also all quite well known and often shown... They could have shown a little more of the circumstances of his other fights. Besides Ali, he also had his difficulties with Bonavena etc... and some of his later fights were not mentioned at all. But anyway, the documentary is only about 80 minutes and should reach as many viewers as possible. Otherwise you would need several parts. Watched it yesterday, pretty damn good! Is it me, or most interviews were conducted at the same time when "Facing Ali" interviews were done.
