Now lets see what happens when the top tier talent switches sports. Oh, wait, none of them ever will do so due to the pay caps.

 

Theres just too many intangibles involved in fighting to be able to say that someone will do well simply because they're athletic.

Also the kind of athleticism needed in American football is not necessarily the most transferable to combat sports. Its all about very short bursts of explosiveness followed by rest, whereas fighting is extremely attritional.

 

I think Herschel Walker is one of those exceptions. I believe he could perform at a high level in any sport, especially sports that rely on athleticism.

Yea, sure, he did not beat anyone of note in MMA, but he looked damn good for a man in his late 40s. I believe he started training for MMA at around the age of 45, altho he might have had some prior training over the years.
