There is no doubt Canleo is skilled. He takes a great punch, has quick hands, good defense and good countering ability. I think his power is decent. But he won neither of the fights with Golovkin.
All his best wins are controversial, and there is a good argument that he lost them. I don't give a fighter props for that. It's really a joke.
I personally thought GGG did the more effective work in the first fight and he likely should have received the nod. Media and the marketing trains tied to this sort of fight might have influenced the draw either way it gave birth to a thrilling rematch. Canelo fought an awesome fight and clearly won 7/5 in my eyes. This takes nothing away from GGG as he did his job and came to win. I’ve watched the fight 2x now and while I’m never one to put heavy emphasis on punch stats I’m amazed by the lack of body shot acknowledgment shown in the data. Canelo was landing some blazing short bread basket blows that went seemingly unoticed all while pushing GGG back for 3/4 of the fight. Seriously though hats off to both these guys GGG lost with pride but I just can’t make an argument for giving him anymore than 5 rounds.
I was rooting for PBF when he fought Canelo yes. Was indifferent when he fought Lara rooted for him against Khan Cotto, Smith, Kirkland, JCC Jr and GGG.
