"IF" the following were to happen, who do you believe to be deserving of fighter of the year honors:

Pacquiao fights Valero and wins by KO
    3-0 Marquez(SD), Diaz(KO), Valero(KO)

Pavlik fights Winky and wins by UD
    3-0 Taylor(UD), Lockett(KO), Wright(UD)

Calzaghe fights Jones and wins by UD
    2-0 Hopkins(SD), Jones(UD)

Cotto defeats Margarito by UD and also fights Dela Hoya and wins by UD
    3-0 Gomez(TKO), Margarito(UD), Dela Hoya(UD)

    Ready...Set...Debate!

    Ok late additions

Margarito defeats Cotto and later fights and defeats Dela Hoya both by UD
    3-0 Cintron(KO), Cotto(UD), Dela Hoya(UD)

Jones Jr. defeats Calzaghe by UD
    2-0 Trinidad(UD), Calzaghe(UD)

    Continue...

With the resumes you've set out, I'm going to say Manny Pacquiao because he will have beaten a top P4P fighter, destroyed a champion, and taken out a KO artist. That's enough for me to give him fighter of the year honors for the second time.

Jones beats Calzaghe and wins by UD
    2-0 Trinidad (UD), Calzaghe (UD)

Surely Jones would have a say in this matter, if he was to beat Calzaghe?

Although I'd think Pavlik or Pacquiao would get it if Calzaghe loses

The media would say Cotto off the De La Hoya win. From that list it's a toss up between Pacquiao and Cotto. I'm leaning towards Pacquiao.

...But where is Mijares... u left him out.
    What "IF"...
Mijares fights Montiel and wins by UD
3-0 Navarro(SD), Munoz (SD), Montiel (UD),
... keep in mind he really won by UD against Navarro, and Munoz, but one judge was a ******.

between cotto and pacquiao, calzaghe won't get the crediability if he does beat jones for the obvious reason that both hopkins and jones were passed it and that statement is true . Pavlik will be fighter of the year in 2009, i think cotto will get the nod if he beats margarito and de la hoya seeing as pacquiao has already been fighter of the year previously in 2006.

Beating Calzaghe would be saying something, but the Trinidad fight doesn't mean much to me at all. Jones was actually expected to knock him out by fans who know boxing.

Unless Pavlik adds Winky to the every growing list of guys who had never been stopped before, it's Pac.

It would be Cotto but he's still got an extremly tough fight in Margarito, also you've got to think that knockouts are going to matter here, and I honestly don't see Margarito or ODLH getting knocked out. On the other hand Pavlik destroyed Lockett and in my opinion will be able to TKO Wright, Winky is getting older and hasn't fought in a while. As for Manny I think Valero may be too new to consider that a huge win and the Marquez fight could have gone either way. And Joe Calzaghe!? ya right, I like Joe but a split decision and 2 wins over 2 old men isn't going to sway anyone except for the british media. If these things were to pan out I would choose Pavlik, I would have chose him last year as well.

Either Cotto or Margarito. Yes I know plenty of you are laughing but think about it...I give Margo credit In the fashion he beat cintron which is a tougher opponent than Gomez, and if he defeats Cotto in a FOY candidate, then slugs it out with DLH and spoils his goodbye, he would be a great cadidate for 2008's best fighter.

Out of your options then Margo.

However, like someone else pointed out, if Mijares beats Montiel in any way (KO, UD, SD) then i would pick him as fighter of the year.

I would say Margarito out those as he would of beat a reigning champion in Cintron, the #1 welterweight in Cotto and the #1 light-middle and ATG in De La Hoya.

He won't beat Cotto though so no point debating. :D

Mijares' two wins this year are already better than any of those combinations of victories that you listed.

Pacquiao fights Valero and wins by KO
    3-0 Marquez(SD), Diaz(KO), Valero(KO)
So a gift decision over Marquez and two wins over fighters who aren't even solid B levels?

Pavlik fights Winky and wins by UD
    3-0 Taylor(UD), Lockett(KO), Wright(UD)
The Taylor win wasn't a good performance, the Wright win doesn't mean much at this point IMO because I think Winky is nearly shot.

Calzaghe fights Jones and wins by UD
    2-0 Hopkins(SD), Jones(UD)
Two old fighters, one who's B- level now.

Cotto defeats Margarito by UD and also fights Dela Hoya and wins by UD
    3-0 Gomez(TKO), Margarito(UD), Dela Hoya(UD)
The last two are pretty good wins if they're dominant KO ones, but Mijares' is likely going to get a Montiel or Donaire fight later in the year, where he will dominate again. So unless he doesn't get the fights, Mijares should be the FOTY.

Cotto or Pac will deserve it but it might go to Calzaghe as he is winding down a brilliant and underrated career and he never received The Ring's fighter of the year honors.
