Impossible to tell. But if Jai Opetaia can unify cruiserweight and move up to win one heavyweight belt, he will have a good case. He does not even need to be undisputed champ at heavy. Just become undisputed at Sheeraz can also be great, if he can win the middleweight belt, defend it a couple of times, and go up to become the man at 168.
Sadly I don’t even think most people in Oz know about him. And Cruiserweight is a very unpopular division mainly because it’s been ruled by fighters outside of North America for most of it’s time.
I am not Australian myself but it doesn't surprise me. Australia has plenty of sports that are popular - AFL in 4 states, Rugby League in the other two states, Cricket throughout the country, Tennis with the Australian open, Basketball with a number of their players in the NBA. In addition, sports such as MMA, Rugby Union and even Soccer have some decent popularity. There simply isn't that much room for boxing. People can only follow so many sports. I do think Opetaia can be very famous among die hard boxing fans - sort of like Usyk was before he won the undisputed HW championship.
Someone from Britain or USA. They won’t allow someone from any country other than these two to become the new face of boxing.
I wish, and I’d think he deserves it…. But I just don’t see it… It’s had to imagine a guy that small, from that part of the world being the face of boxing. Pac was up to 140 by the time he was starting to be looked at as the face of the sport iirc, and the prospective match-up with Mayweather as they got nearer in weight class was a big part of that.
Usyk is not the face of boxing, sadly if you go up to a rando sports fan, they’re more likely to be familiar with AJ, Fury, and Wilder - despite the fact that Usyk has fought and beat two of the three…. But he should be, IMO… Honestly, Canelo is still the face of boxing, and while he’s Mexican, he was being pushed in the US by ODLH on Floyd Mayweather cards (and eventually fought Floyd himself). I don’t think it’s right or fair, but it really does take special circumstances for someone outside of the US / Britain to become “the face”.. and it seems to involve leveraging a very popular fighter from those regions when it does happen.
Gervonta Davis and/or Ryan Garcia, depending on how they're matched up in the next 3 years Canelo and all the current top HWs are in decline
Hard to say really. None of the TR prospects (Mason, Muratalla, Keyshawn, etc.) look all too promising imo, though I do have a soft spot for Xander Zayas, but even then I'm wary. Boots Ennis seems a strong contender though if the matchmaking works in his favour. He's American, he's charismatic, he's fun to watch, hits hard, and he's big enough to go up to 160 quite probably. Ticks pretty much all the boxes you'll often see in boxing stars.
Everyone I've ever spoken to about boxing knows about Usyk. The kids at school talk about Usyk. He's a massive name. He has unified the HW division, don't underestimate how much that's worth. And Canelo is Mexican, not UK or US. So there 2 guys right there who are the faces without being UK/US Ironically the most US of the p4p guys is Crawford and he's miles away from being the face.
