The all time heavyweight dream match. Oft discussed on here but it's easy to see why. I see Ali edging Louis. Both men have the style to give each other problems, but I see Muhammad's adaptability and cast iron jaw being the deciding factors.
I much prefer Joe Louis the man, but, he wouldn't beat the 67' ali and I reckon ali would stop bomber joe. sorry joe !!!
Speed of foot, better chin, overall faster mitts put Ali over the great Joe Louis in my book no matter how many times I try to change this in my mind.
I tend to Ali, yet there have been moments I've looked at Ali vs other fighters and thought "Good thing for Ali that Joe Louis isn't standing in front of him right now."
I personally dont care for Louis, and his competition sucked all the way but .... I see the technical prowess of Joe giving Ali problems, same as Norton. My question is, can Ali handle a good jab? What about everything else behind it? would Ali make the mistake of laying on the ropes? I dont think Joe would fare well against a class puncher like Dempsey or Foreman but Ali wasnt a dangerous puncher. If he had the explosive right hand of Holmes, along with his ferocious temper (especially when he got hurt), I would favor Ali by tko
Alis footwork and Louis lack of, plays a big role in this. Ali would get in and out and Louis would be chasing ghosts all night. Ali himself said (about Louis) something to the effect float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, Louis hands cant hit what Louis cant see. Taken from the Thomas Hauser book 'Ali's life and times'
The only time Ali was laying on the ropes was after a 3 year layoff and that against George Foreman, he wouldnt need to do that against Louis. Unless you want to even the odds a bit and put 'Zaire' Ali in with Louis?
I like Louis here with a lot of action but Joe gets that short hook in with perfection followed by the right. Ali flurries and moves but finds himself in with a quicker harder hitting and bigger version of Frazier who is harder to hit and much more technically sound Louis could be the guy to stop Ali or win with Ali hurt often, Louis was no George Foreman he had 15 round stamina
Louis is not stopping a guy who fought Frazier, Shavers, Foreman and Liston and was stopped by neither and got up from a Joe Frazier left hook at the count of 2, when most guys didnt even get up or went straight to sleep. :verysad
