Over his long career and many fights, I would put Nicolino Locche as #1.

I know that it happened. I saw every televisioned fight of his. And yes that fight was a disgrace. So? It was his second last fight, he was pretty much past his prime and his legs were nearly gone. No excuse though. Ottke is **** and one of the most boring fighters ever. However, he did somethings very well and that included what I described.

Ottke was a horrible fighter stylistically and got the benefit of the doubt a couple of times, but i actually think he's underrated nowadays. Most of his closer fights have been embellished into outrageous non-competitive robberies when it became popular to do so a few years back.

Mostly by the Calzaghe and Glen Johnson fans of course

Yep, he had four fights that could have gone either way but got the decision everytime - although the fights were only close because Ottke stopped fighting and started running when he had it in the bag, his corner knew the scorecards which should cause bigger outrage than that he got the decision in those fights IMO. And then there was the Reid fight which was a disgrace and destroyed Germany´s reputation.
I agree he was a mess stylistically, a spoiler but he was good at that. And he was good at not getting hit which kinda was my original point.

Look,he was short, had zero power and wasn't particularly athletic but he managed to retire undefeated (with a little help from some generous scoring),so clearly he had some things going for him,his defense being one thing.

Actually his display against Mundine was one of his better ones.Mundine had a huge edge in speed and probably natural talent as well but I thought Ottke was on his way to beating him anyway before the out of character display of power.

That said he was ****ing horrible to watch as a rule.

Yes, he was. The shot he knocked Mundine out looked a bit out of place that´s true and while I won´t claim he was a power puncher I think he could punch harder than his record shows. Same with Whitaker for example, I think those guys sacrificed some of their power by not fully committing to their punches due to their style. Both showed that they can turn it up when they needed though.

I think most elite, world class fighters, even if they're not big punchers, have that ability to badly hurt most any opponent if they land cleanly in the right spot.

    Think Nunn-Kalambay,Whitaker-Nazario or indeed Ottke-Mundine.

That said for a spoiler like Ottke or an ultra-cutie like Whitaker a KO was definately an exception rather than the norm and not something they actively seeked.

:good To be world class you need some basic power and with the right timing and placing this is enough to score a KO.
