One of the best British heavyweights. I met him when I was a kid. I like the fact that he respected the British title and defended it so many times. Not like the fighters today who often vacate it as soon as they win it. And then there was Bruno, who didn't even bother to fight for it (he certainly could have won it in the mid-80s), and fought imported bums instead for the most part.
Sonny Banks did deck a young Cassius Clay, (Muhammad Ali) in 1962, Sir Henry Cooper did on June 18 1963. I remember seeing Muhammad Ali vs Sir Henry Cooper live on ABC's Wide World Of Sports on May 21 1966 in his only shot at the title, Cooper fought very valiantly but was stopped by TKO 6. R.I.P. Champ.
The greatest title ever is the British. I would love to see a revival of it. So sad that fighters have become so blinkered with alphabet groups for fame and money, when this title is more than enough to set them up for life. Oh well, we will soon see most of the superstars on the next series of love island or former fighters trying to get a few quid on i'm a celeb...
Didn't realize what an imbecile Joe Bugner is, "In 100 years, nobody will remember..... Lennox Lewis.....they will be footnotes in history." What an idiot
