What do you think of Ring Magazine's list? 1. Max Schmeling, Germany (56-10-4, 40 KOs): The former champion knocked out a young Joe Louis in 1936. 2. Lennox Lewis, England (41-2-1, 32 KOs): Arguably the best heavyweight since Larry Holmes. 3. Tommy Farr, Wales (81-30-13, 24 KOs): Held his own against the best heavyweights in the world in the 1930s. 4. Joe Bugner, England (69-13-1, 41 KOs): Had a successful career during the 1970s and ‘80s, an era deep in good heavyweights. 5. Vitali Klitschko, Ukraine (37-2, 36 KOs): The tougher of the brothers has a remarkable KO ratio. 6. Wladimir Klitschko, Ukriane (52-3, 46 KOs): The more-athletic of the brothers has won 10 in a row. 7. Ingemar Johannson, Sweden (26-2, 17 KOs): His three-fight series against Floyd Patterson is legendary. 8. Frank Bruno, England (40-5, 38 KOS): Held one of the major titles until Mike Tyson took it from him. 9. Henry Cooper, England (40-14-1, 27 KOs): Came close to upsetting a young Muhammad Ali in 1963. 10. Karl Mildenberger, Germany (53-6-3, 19 KOs): The southpaw competed favorably with the top heavyweights of the 1960s. I think it's rubbish. Lewis has got to be #1 unquestionably. I think the Klitschko boys should be next. I think if Wlad wins the linear title on Saturday, I have a hard time ranking him anywhere but #2. Wlad's consistency and H2H ability overshawdows the rest of them. Beating Chagaev would make that SEVEN wins over Ring top 10 hws in his last nine fights. That's pretty much clearing out a division, including 16 world title fights. Thoughts...
There sorts of lists are always difficult to analyse as we don't really have an idea of what the creators definition of "greatness" is. Looks like a decent list, i would have Lewis at one and have Vitali a place or two higher.
Holyfield, Tyson, Vitali, Tua, Rahman, Mercer, Golota, McCall, Ruddock, Morrison, Grant, Briggs, Akinwande, Tucker, Bruno, Mason, Biggs, Mavrovic, McCrory, Weaver, Ocasio... Bowe didn't want any, neither did a younger version of Tyson who paid Lewis millions to not fight him. Who else could he have fought?
A bad article for sure. Farr, Cooper, and Mildenberger do not belong as the won no world titles, and lost multiple times. I would replace them with Chagaev, Ibragimov, and Povetkin, who are clealry better. The order of this list is horrible too. Maybe Bugner makes the cut, but wasn't he Assuie?
Are you suggesting the 1990s was a weak era for heavyweights, thats a joke. Lennox Lewis is easily a top 5 heavyweight of all times.
Its usually considered the 2nd best era after the 70s. Please Lennox has a far better resume than any other euro heavyweight.
Winning paper "world" titles today is the equivalent of being a top contender pre-alphabet titles. Farr fought the best of his time, beating some of them and always troubling them. I personally would take wins against Max Baer, Tommy Loughran, Larry Gains, Walter Neusel, Ben Foord and close losses to Louis and Braddock over winning a "world title" against a lethargic Shannon Briggs/Nikolai Valuev.
Marciano's era was never considered better than the 90s please. It was Rocky Marciano and 3 natural light heavyweights, nice era.
