Usyk is certainly up there. I'd even say AJ is pretty well rounded though I can see him being argued out of the top 10. Ezzard Charles deserves mentioning too.
I would love to place Usyk up there. He showed outstanding offense vs AJ and Fury. But he doesn't go for the finish when he has someone hurt. I am not saying you always need to finish someone but someone like Louis wouldn't let you off the hook when he has you hurt. If Usyk can tko 2 or 3 top ranked heavies, i would consider putting him in the lower half of my top 10.
Lewis had the same problem of letting guys off the hook too though, and he's been mentioned and accepted in this thread. Usyk went for the finish against Fury but wasn't permitted to do so by an incompetent ref. He had AJ staggered badly at the end of the 12th in the first fight iirc but the bell rang and he never got his chance to go for the kill. I think Usyk understands his limitations and understands that he can't go in guns blazing because he doesn't have that kind of power and he doesn't want to get reckless and get countered. For my money though, Usyk is a more complete fighter when it comes to offence, defence, footwork, and the like than a guy like Louis even if he lacks the same power. Usyk is incredibly versatile and in spite of not having great power I think he's already made himself a very sound pick for even top 5 imo.
Fair enough. I respect where you are coming from. I love Usyk's offense but i do wish he used his variations a bit more often - the right hook and uppercuts in particular. I agree that Usyk was prevented from getting a tko vs Fury. I don't have an issue with people placing Usyk in the top 10 - i am a huge fan of Usyk and i love his offense even though i wish he used his variations more often. But no doubt he has excellent offense.
Hi Buddy. Please, please take my post and remarks in the vein they are meant, you have commented in the short past ,that you like my posts and my views, which was very kind of you, so I feel a bit sad and disappointed when I see you getting involved in these pointless scraps and arguments about boxers of the past, in particular Sonny Liston, believe me we all know your favorite fighter, your posts are heavily lent towards Liston, his fights, his reign, his opponents, his character, which to a degree is fine, but there are lots and lots of HWs you could be discussing with the forum, and its learned members, and in your defence you have posted that you want to be educated on the great fighters of the past, as do we all, no one poster here knows it all, believe me, quite a few are well versed in the history of our sport, and you would do well to take on board their thoughts, as I have done over the past few years, much to my enrichment, try not to be hoodwinked into a long spat it does not serve you ( or any of us ) well, you seem a good person, with a keen insight into HW boxing, keep it like that, and try not to drawn down to the level of posters that you are palpable better than, hope my musings on your recent to and thro, are not seen as poking my nose in, that's not my intention , my attention is to alleviate any more rages and arguments going forward, kind regards Mike. stay safe SL, chat soon I hope.
Hey Mike, thanks for the advice. Iv been trying pretty hard recently to not make any threads regarding Liston and think I’m doing pretty good, haven’t made one in a while. I have been trying hard to diversify my boxing resume and glad people are noticing. I have seen this guy say similar things multiple times and its quite aggravating to see, obviously heart matters but no champion can have 0 heart. But ill try to keep out of the petty squabbles and pick my battles. Thanks for the advice Mike, God bless you and your family.
Agreed. The sight of Tyson scrabbling on the floor to replace his mouthpiece so he could resume getting the ever living shite kicked out of him is as clear a manifestation of heart as you'll see. It was a nonsense post made by the forum's worst poster. The question is 'best offence', not best ability to take a beating uncomplainingly and get up to win. Bruce Seldon and Tommy Morrison may be legitimate considerations for this thread I don't want to get all 'Larry Holmes' on Marciano but this obsession with Marciano and his heart. Dear me. He got up to win having been floored by Joe Walcott and the 42 year old former middleweight Archie Moore. Neither Tyson nor Liston see the canvas against those two. Which ... is an ... equally ... irrelevant and ... pointless comment on .. this ... thread.
Joe Frazier had a pretty good offense up to and including the FOTC . Lennox rates high for me , what often held him in check was his cautious mentality. When he let it all go he was as destructive and offensively complete as any.
If we don't consider how porous Bowe's inside defense was (which he gets for being a tall guy giving up his height), how flustered he could get, how he could wing right hands a la Wilder and how underwhelming his power was.... Speaking of which, let's add Deontay.
Larry Holmes and Max Schmeling deserve a mention. Holmes was very dangerous offensively, he was usually the one hunting down his opponent and he did it methodically with terrific accuracy. His opponents couldn't even risk fighting back as he would mercilessly counter them. Schmeling for his incredible right hand power, accuracy, speed and versatility. His superb stamina allowed him to throw his devastating right with force for the whole fifteen rounds of the fight, constantly luring his prey in with feints and head movement. His ko victories over Stribling, Risko and Louis are a testament to his punching ability.
