IN MY LIFETIME, I STARTED GOING TO FIGHTS IN PHILLY AND SUROUNDING AREA IN 1970. Fletcher Duran Briscoe Saad Frazier Hamsho Gomez (only on t.v.) Ganigan (tv) Pryor Billy Douglas Little Red Galindez (just a personal fav. don't know why) I have Cuevas set, but he was never on T.V. until Volbrook
These are two favorites of mine too...Little Red was obviosly an exciting fighter, and Galindez a little less so, but he's always been a particular favorite of mine as well!
All the guy's you mentioned were exciting. I would pobaly add Holyfield, Gatti, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Tommy Hearns, and Ray Mancini. But of course you said name only 10 fighters.
i loved watching Willie Monroe, Bobby Watts, Bennie Briscoe, Cyclone etc while I was growing up....I never really got to see Gypsy Joe Harris or Kitten Hayward in their best years, did you catch any of them???? I miss the Old Spectrum....Some of my best memories are w/ my Pop Pop at the Blue horizon, my all time favorite venue..something special about a fight there!
I know that Galindez was capable of turning it on like a will bull...a savage..as Len Hutchins or Ritchie kates would probably testify to, but he developed thatless exciting "sit and wait" strategy of laying on the ropes and counterpunching (a smart style that was successful for him BTW)...so I'm a bit reluctant to include Victor in a "most exciting " list.
Never understood this myth of Duran being an exciting fighter.Being an aggressive fighter doesn't necessarily make you an exciting one.Not enough exciting performances, and far too much clinching, mauling and smothering inside work to consider him as an exciting fighter.
You're right. But even today when I watch the career set I have of him, as boring as the fight is, the way he thru his punches w/ absolutely EVERYTHING andf his complete wild man out iof the Pampas look thrill me. I have a great pic of Galindez standing next to Gregory after the weighin w/ a condisending smirk on his face and Gregory actually looks intimidated. Galindez was every bit as confident and conceited in his disdain foropponanmts as Duran and Monzon and ahat is what made him so exciting and I think great. After the bloodbath against Kates, he lost something but was still Galindez and his over the tiop religious ferver (thank you Howard Cosell) concentration against Rossman in 79 and his putting it in his face is boxing to me. Rossman messed w/ the bull, tried to show off and got his ass kicked. R.I.P. Victor, and I hope Tito is w/ you in heaven and readty to work on your cuts.
Yes. I saw Hayward 4 or 5 times, in wins and losses. He was a good fighter, but old in the 70s really as Briscoe was. My fav. was the Tuesday fights at The Philadelphia Spectrum. I loved the fights there and The Broad Street Bullies Stanley Cups. I'm still a big Flyers fan. The Spectrum was awesome. They could have the Olympic in L.A. I had the Spectrum. There were so many exciting fighters in and around the Philly area then. Just watching Frazier train was unbelievable. I can still hear the left hook cutting thru the air and the uuummmppppphhhhh!!!!! as it landed on sparing partners and heavy bags. Curtis Parker was great to watch spar. I saw a lot of Briscoe and really believe that a younger Briscoe from 70-73, would have taken Hagler. Briscoe was a panther. I was lucky enough to recently get a career set of Baaadddd Bennie from a seller out of Australia oddly enough. And watching it brings back all the memories. Even when he lost, he still beat the **** out of guys. His wide body punchers hurt just watching them. I f you would like to get a set, I'll give you the email address. Most are without announcers, but that is great because there are no distractions. I remember seeing Braxton come up in the gym and ring. And of course the Animal, who was excitement personified as he stomped out to get down. On the Duran-Viruet undercard, I saw Billy Douglas flatten Saad, only to have Matt rise kinda late and then destroy Douglas. And Franklin was a warrior and worth every penny to see. I used to go to fights in Upper Darby too. It was just a great scene in the 70s and early 80s in Philly for me w/ all the fight action and enjoy it more as I age than I did then. Great memories!:thumbsup
Some people like that ****. He did it at a very fast pace too. He's not really a swarmer, but if you like watching swarmers work then you'll like Duran.
