Felix Trinidad beat Fernando Vargas in a classic LMW unification fight. I remember that my friends car broke down on our way to watch the fight and we just left the car there and ran to the place we were going (about 3 miles way) and got there in time uff. I was jumping at every movement, twisting my ankle with a beer bottle that somebody left on the ground but I didnt care I used my other leg to jump. It was a hell of a fight. Time sure flies...

What a fight. Man, the rematch would have been even better.

Absolutely it was a great matchup stylistically. Prime Vargas was really good and he had a ton of heart.

The fight that ruined Vargas. Too much too soon.

Trinidad looked very good in that fight and it pretty much sent Vargas on the slippery slope.

Same age as me now:think makes you wonder why the hell he is already in there with prime tito, imagine if he had won the fight, that would have made oscar vs vargas even more epic. I read somewhere that vargas was calling out de la hoya years before they actually fought.
That he only took him on after trinidad ruined him.
Even now vargas is 32/33 then yet he has been destroyed for a decade now.

It was classic! Vargas had some heart! Sad to hear that he was taking for his money, and he is planning a comeback by the way! I hope he can get in great shape and get some good wins and make a few million! Who knows, all this time off probably did wonders for him in healing his body!

That tells you right there that prime and age are not correlated

yes, but it is kind of logical to assume a fighters prime is when he is young and strong and lasts for several years, e.g. ali or jones, on the other hand some guys go prime late like wlad. Its to bad about vargas though he had great potential.

Tito was the man back then. Unified welter champ, destroyed two hungry young champs at 154, then crushed Joppy for his 160 title..and wanted to face RJJ after unifying at 160 vs Hopkins..Too bad Hopkins derailed that train..Tito never got the same respect as an elite fighter after that.

great fight, one of my favorites
