Unfortunately more than likely he wont get in great shape and he wont be successful if he makes a comeback. There's too much talent at higher weights for him to be competitive at this point.

YEP, DLH Had a knack 4 doing this,:huh taking on Trinidad's leftovers became an obsession 4 him.... he did it with Carr, Campas, Vargas, Mayorga & even tried with Hopkins as well, but same results, or should I say worst!! He never dared to go near Winky even though WWcalled him out several times!!

C'mon man, he's an ATG, probably lower level top 100, but an ATG no doubt.

Remember the fight clearly. Vargas ring walk with Tyson.

Left hook from Trinidad with about a minute gone in the first.

Vargas dropped trinindad in the middle rounds , and a punch way below the belt gave Tito some time.

    A great great fight.

Im not trying to critisize him or anything, but I did a thread once on who are atg in the last 20 years and his name didnt came up thats why i wondered. I remember reading similiar thread from mid 00 and everyone considered him a atg. That is why I get the impression his rep is fading.

Maybe so. Like I said, after the shutout to Hops I felt his reputation as an eilte boxer did take a big dive. Then there was the Winky shutout. Maybe with those bad losses being fresher in the minds, even though they came as he was challenging himself at the higher weights, his previous achievements are easily overlooked now. And this is ESB, I notice heaps of new fans all the time, who prob weren't fans back then or were too young to be, and didn't live through Tito at his best.

Yeah. Its a common misconception IMO that this ruined Vargas. He was in wars with Winky Wright and Ike Quartey beforehand, was putting on masses of weight between fights and losing it, had several slipped disks requiring medical work (I think) and was abusing steroids. That all accumulated to him declining IMO. Don't get me wrong Tito hit him with monster punches but it wasen't a huge beating, there were just hard knockdowns in the fight.

Age does have to do with prime. Its proven scientific fact. However, if something happens to you at 23 and you are not healthy after that, then thats it. In Vargas case, that was the kind of fight that affects you for life. Plus, he developed back problems. And Trinidad, his right eye was affected on that fight too. They said he recovered, but who knows.

Fights where you take that amount of "TRINIDAD" punches, can have bigger effects than getting KO cold in one round. And please, be careful when saying "STEROIDS". I don't know if Fernando ever used anabolic steroids, but corticosteroids are an essential part of treatment when a person have back problems like Fernando. They are used for their antinflamatory effects. And they do cause a lot of weight gain.

The glaring memory I have from the fight is at the end of it. Vargas is a beaten man, sat on his stool in his corner, his head down, look of a broken man. The, Mike Tyson jumps up & encourages Fernando to not be down, to hold his head high, telling him something like "You have just fought a great fight, gave your all, hold your head high!"

Absolute class by Tyson! Vargas at his peak was good, but this was a case of putting him in too deep too soon! Should have been given more time to blossom as a fighter.

Vargas ducked nobody! You have to give him credit for that!
