Jezreel Corrales defeated Takashi Uchiyama to win the WBA Super Featherweight Title. This content is protected Basic facts aside. This was a huge shocker back in the day. Even though it didn't win the upset of the year (that award went to Joe Smith's win over Fonfara), it was one of the bigger upsets in the 2010's. Uchiyama, was by and large the top fighter at 130 for most of the decade. Six year title reign, eleven defenses and on the pound for pound, and for him to be decimated in two rounds by a light puncher in Corrales was something else. Had Uchiyama won, it would have tied the division record for most consecutive title defenses alongside Brian Mitchell, which makes the loss all the more gut wrenching, when he failed. Too bad Uchiyama isn't that well known outside of Japan and places like here. He was really good and was always fun to watch.
I remember how much of a shocker it was at the time. Uchiyama was such a dangerous puncher but to be taken out by a light hitter like Corrales came out of nowhere. And then in the rematch he lost again but by close decision. Corrales just had a style that was wrong for him. Awesome fighter Uchiyama was though.
I'm not much of a lower weight fan but I remember watching this. Uchiyama was on my radar knocking guys out, nice upset
