10 years on from Calzaghe Vs Hopkins?

Hopkins was 43 years old. That’s why he got tired


The 1997-2001 Hopkins would have not gotten tired

 

First time I watched it I thought it was very close and could have gone either way. On subsequent watchings I realised that Calzaghe actually landed a lot more punches and should have been the winner of a competitive fight.

Well Hopkins did not gas in other fights after this one. My point is Calzaghe set a pace he wasn't comfortable with.

Jones vs Hopkins wasn't close either. Hopkins was a counter type and did not do well vs speedy movers.

 

If you want to argue that Hopkins could fight at a pace even close to Joe's I'd point you towards the RJJ fight, which he showed little desire to extend himself and go all out for the win.

 

Why is it feasible to remove Joe's elite stamina (clearly one of his best attributes) in a comparison if they'd win if Hopkins was younger? It's a fair argument to make that Hopkins MIGHT have been able to keep up with Joe's pace if he was younger, but simply taking away his best asset is an incredibly weak argument to be made.

 

Joe was no spring chicken himself. And i would dare say that his style suffered more from aging than did Hopkins cerebral (dirty) style.

 

I respect Hopkins as a fighter but he was classless in this fight before and during the fight. I felt BHop faked the low blow because he was starting to tire and needed a break from the Calzage pace. I felt it was cheap and fraudulent. JC outlanded him and made the pace of the fight, the replay showed no low blows & BHop stretched the rest period. Calzage won comfortably IMO and remember Joe Calzage was also what 36

 

Hopkins would have always had trouble with the pace Joe set and the speed & volume JC brought.

 

I’m sure Jones would’ve beaten Calzaghe if they were younger. I think Hopkins probably still would’ve lost to Joe.
