A hoora square go, ya numpty! Appleby wasn't yet on my radar in '08 (although Simmo might've been) - most of his career highlights would come a few years later, as his prime's candle briefly flared up bright and then burnt out, with Simpson actually knocking him out in a 2012 rematch to usher in the gloaming. I remember well his fierce tussle with Liam Walsh, Martin Lindsay and Stephen Ormond...but on balance Paul had not half as many epic moments as John and is the less treasured Scot pugilist despite having bested him for the BBBofC featherweight title in this first encounter and having a numerically more positive record (winning 76% and kayoing 44%, against Simpson winning 70% and kayoing 29%) versus similar caliber opponents.
John Simpson was a top little fighter far better than his record suggest...… on quite a few wrong end of the decisions throughout his career
