... Kid Chocolate Arguello is bigger, Chocolate is faster. I see the Kid outboxing Alexis always wary of his power but in the end winning a clear decision. ... Tony Canzoneri Again Arguello is bigger, Canzoneri a bit faster and unorthodox. I think Canzoneri´s style won´t do him good against a hard puncher like Arguello, even so he has a very good chin and a very good defence. Tony Canzoneri Alexis Arguello Kid Chocolate Well, how are you guys seeing those match-ups and how are you ranking those three guys in comparison to each other?
Arguello was a straight, sharp puncher who typically aimed at the sternum, so he'd be certain to land something. The best way to make him miss was to get underneath his shots, not the primary way Canzi and the Kid usually evaded blows. Alexis was very much an old school stylist with badly underrated hand speed and quickness at 130, and a superb body puncher at all times. El Flaco Explosivo is indeed my top man at 130, and I believe his classical approach would see him through to a close decision victory over both fellow greats at this weight. Arguello would come in expecting to go the championship distance, and be prepared accordingly. (However, only an uninformed idiot would place any money on the outcome with any alacrity. We've plenty of footage of all three, and we all know better than to bet the rent on a certain result.) Bodhi, I have no great quarrel with your conclusion in favor of Chocolate. Enormous respect for both. I do think Arguello's precision body attack would slow the Kid to the point where he'd be overtaken late on the cards. Vilomar Fernandez did beat Alexis over ten, but an MD verdict was a fair representation of how competitive it was, and nobody ever came close to sustaining that over the championship distance in a serious bid to win during his peak.
Ah, no problem with people picking Arguello over Chocolate. Arguello was an awesome fighter and a very good sharpshooter but I think Chocolate would get of first most of the time, and I think his defence was good enough to avoid the most damaging punches of Alexis and aggressive enough to win rounds. Amazing fighter. Arguello is certainly top tier at 130 together with Canzoneri, Chocolate, Mayweather and Chavez.
Arguello vs Canzoneri Tony is a superb counter-puncher but his low handed style and cocky style I think is a bad thing here. Arguello has no qualms digging to the body when the head is unavailable and is laser accurate with his shots at times and would be able to land on Canzoneri's head after setting it up to the body. I do think Canzoneri would have to show some movement in this and could do fairly well sliding in off his left jab with a left hook, then pivoting away, but just I see Arguello overwhelming him at times with accurate combinations. Arguello by decision. Arguello vs Kid Chocolate As people have mentioned Chocolate's movement will be a problem for Arguello, and early on Chocolate would give Arguello hell at times, with his fast two handed combinations and superb counter-shots. I'm thinking though that Choclate may at times be a bit stupid and fight it out with Arguello, as every bit of footage we have of Chocolate he is abit too eager at times to engage. Inside again I reckon Arguello can take away Chocolates head movement by targetting the body then bringing it up to the head. I'll take Arguello to grind it out late on points, in a corker. I would rate them Arguello Canzoneri Chocolate But they are very close.
