8 Man Lightweight Tournament (@135) Quarterfinals Roberto Duran vs. Floyd Mayweather Alexis Arguello vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Pernell Whitaker vs. Manny Pacquiao Aaron Pryor vs. Juan Manuel Marquez Who wins this tournament with the initial matches set up like this? So many possibilities, I just want to hear some scenarios play out. Winners of the upper group fight each other and winners of the lower group fight each other in the semis. Lets see some ideas
Quarters Duran beats floyd fairly close but clear decision (8-4 with a few debatable rounds for both ways) Chavez beats arguello close fight but I think Chavez takes a close one and maybe stops him late Whitaker beats PAC schooling, don't think there can be any arguments here Marquez beats Pryor (on the basis that I don't think Pryor even fought at lightweight) Semis Duran beats Chavez hard fought fight but Duran gets the better of it and stops Chavez from 8-11 Whitaker beats Marquez dominating win floyd Vs Marquez style. Final Whitaker - Duran. Too close too call IMO.
Roberto Duran vs. Floyd Mayweather: Mayweather is underrated as a lightweight. Unless he has a hurt hand like he had in the first Castillo fight which he won by the way, and I mean won easily despite the scores. Duran's pressure plays right into his hands. Mayweather advances with a fairly easy decision. Alexis Arguello vs. Julio Cesar Chavez: Both better at super featherweight than they were at lightweight. Chavez was the better lightweight and wins a close decision Pernell Whitaker vs. Manny Pacquiao. Whitaker is way too slick for Pacquiao. Whitker may not have been a ko artist, but he had a good punch at 135. Whitaker cruses to an easy decision. Aaron Pryor vs. Juan Manuel Marquez. Toughest bout of the first round. Pryor builds an early lead on Marquez possibily knocks him down. As the fight progreses the counter punching Marquez finds his mark. When the points are talllied Marquez gets the narow win. Floyd Mayweather vs. Julio Cesar Chavez. Not much diffrent from Mayweather/Duran. Pernell Whitaker vs. Juan Manuel Marquez. Marquez has been an over achiver in his career. He's made himself into a great counter puncher. Whitaker is a natural boxer. Marquez has his spots, but Whitaker wins pretty convincely. Pernell Whitaker vs. Floyd Mayweather . Mayweather has all the tools to win this bout. He's got skills, speed, decent power and a great work ethic. he is also the bigger man. I have every reason to pick him here. Howeve, I just can't pick against Whitaker or Benny Leonard at 135. Pernell Whitaker by decision close, but clear 8-4.
Pryor DID fight at lightweight and more importantly he could still make it when he was at 140. There were even talks of him actually going back down. :good
quarter finals : Duran UD12 Mayweather Chavez TKO12 Arguello Pacquiao UD12 Whitaker Marquez UD12 Pryor (may even b TKO12) semi finals : Duran D12 Chavez (Chavez gets 2d next stage due 2 his better win in d previous stage , according 2 Frankinian rules) Pacquiao SD12 Marquez (due 2 multiple KDs , not a robbery) finals : Chavez SD12 Pacquiao
Duran no problem in quarter final a davey moore type performance KO'S Chavez with 10 seconds left UD V Sweet pea
And Rodrigo Valdez beats Carlos Monzon so long as a sweet_scientist scorecard adjudicates (good word that, I'll be using it from now on).
