135: Oscar De La Hoya(1995) vs Manny Pacquiao

he developed a good one when he moved up to light-middleweight though, but at lightweight your right too left hook happy

 

He never had a great right hand, but he had the best jab in the market at the time, and that's one of the best weapons to beat Pacquiao's style.

I give this young Oscar a very good chance to beat Pacquiao. Not only was he already skilled, he was big, strong, and hungry.

 

This is why I stopped taking anybody from ESB seriously - even the so called self proclaimed experts and hardcore fans.
Pac will never win a H2H match up unless you say "Pac vs MAB" 2003 @ 126. Even then people will, MAB by brutal KO.

ODLH was no where near his peak weight and had only 17 fights. He had decent hand speed but I would not describe his movement (both body and feet) anything special. He was definitely hittable.

 

Oscar always had a good right hand, it just never stood out considering he has perhaps the best left hook/uppercut this side of Leonard.

 

Manny just simply beats Oscar's style everytime , whether it be at 130 or 154, and I have really enjoyed Oscars career. He simply wouldnt be able to land that left hook that has made him so effective over the years. I dont see him getting knocked out , but clearly beaten. He was pretty shakey though at the lower weights , I think that was because he was a bit over aggresive espcially at 130.

 

Gotta go with DLH. He has speed, power, movement...HAte to say, but he KO's Pac.

 

I'd say that's a little excessive, Pacquiao at that weight was much more seasoned in terms of boxing experience, hit pretty ****ing hard, and was starting to balance out as a fighter. Oscar at LW had phenomenal athletic ability but he was still very much a one handed fighter at the time. It'd be more competitive than you think.

Oscar was a monster at here and 140 though, so I can understand why you'd feel that way.

 

He and Shane were the twin terrors of lightweight in the last 20 years (maybe since Duran). People who think either of them enjoyed their physical primes at welterweight are dead wrong. They both developed and diversified their skills and gained big-fight experience upon moving up, yes - but they were both absolute forces of nature at 135 (and nowhere else).

The small sampling we got of Pacquiao at the weight (D. Diaz alone) hardly made him out to be a force of nature...just a very good fighter moving up and handily beating a just-okay fighter.

Sorry cannot agree with you , watch Oscar against Molina, this was at lightweight and for long periods Oscar really struggled , and it showed his limitations with movers and his left hand reliant moves. Oscar would always struggle with Manny's foot speed and angles.

 

No. If people were picking Pacquiao to lose at 130 lbs to, say, Vitali Tajbert (or any other super feathweight shy of maybe a few ATGs), they would be severely underrating Pacquiao. That's his all-but-untouchable weight - not 135 or anything higher.

Suggesting that he'd lose to an absolute beast at lightweight is not blasphemy, sorry.

Yeah there were holes. He wasn't a complete, mature fighter yet but he was an awesome destroyer.

Molina wasn't a bad fighter at all (even at that point) and stylistically wasn't very similar to Pacman, so I don't really see how that informs this hypothetical match. They both used movement but in very different patterns.

You don't necessarily have to be able to time the speed and angles of Pacquiao's movement to catch him as long as you punch with him, which Marquez managed to do at times. If there's one thing the young DLH had no trouble with it was willingness to pull the trigger or instincts about when to do it.

 

roach knew oscar couldn't pull the trigger anymore when he fought manny in 08. a young oscar can. I'm pretty sure oscar could badly hurt any lightweight ever if he lands a big left. that said pacs speed and style will cause any lightweight problems. i pick dlh by stoppage after a war
