Rather than name our personal favorites; based on those who have won Fighter of The Decade, how would you rank them in order from 1-14? 1880-89: John L. Sullivan 1890-99: Bob Fitzsimmons, with honorable mention to James J. Corbett 1900-09: Joe Gans, with honorable mention to James Jeffries and Stanley Ketchel 1910-19: Jack Johnson 1920-29: Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney, with honorable mention to Benny Leonard 1930-39: Joe Louis, with honorable mention to Henry Armstrong 1940-49: Sugar Ray Robinson 1950-59: Rocky Marciano, with honorable mention to Archie Moore 1960-69: Muhammad Ali 1970-79: Roberto Duran, with honorable mention to Carlos Monzon 1980-89: Sugar Ray Leonard, with honorable mention to Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Marvin Hagler and Julio Cesar Chavez 1990-99: Roy Jones Jr., with honorable mention to Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Pernell Whitaker 2000-09: Manny Pacquiao, with honorable mention to Floyd Mayweather and Bernard Hopkins 2010-2019: You can choose one of the Honorable Mentions as Best. Henry Armstrong Sugar Ray Robinson Muhammad Ali Benny Leonard Archie Moore Joe Gans Roberto Duran Sugar Ray Leonard Bob Fitzsimmons Manny Pacquiao Jack Johnson Roy Jones Jr John L Sullivan This is based off my pfp list, not h2h or based on achievements in that decade. Also it's a bit of a **** take that Ezzard Charles wasn't even an honourable mention for the 40s or Tommy Hearns for the 80s Dempsey wasn't even fighting for 6 years in the 20s, there's no way he should've got it over Greb and Johnson <<<< Langford.
1. 1930-39: Henry Armstrong -grabbed multiple titles, 27KOs in a row, FOTY. 2. 1940-49: Sugar Ray Robinson went 73 1 1 beat every top contender @WW plus former and future champs 3. 1980-89: Mike Tyson, Youngest to win/unify HW division in brutal fashion, sold out arenas & PPV records 4. 1970-79: Carlos Monzon (Personally I'd pick Ali for winning HW title 3 times- taking Foremans '0.' 5. 2000-09: Floyd Mayweather from SuperFeather-LW, Jr Welter & welter in one decade, broke PPV rec with DLH, best punch stats ever. 6. 1960-69: Muhammad Ali title @ 22, develops a HW style after WW R. Robinson. Cuts, slashes, busts up many fighters fastest HW ever. 7. 1900-09: Joe Gans Lw taking on HW's like Langford? Catch weight would've been sissified to the LW Old Master! 8. 1950-59: Archie Moore hamp @36yrs old. Longest reign & uncontested @ LHW, lost only 3x in this decade: Rocky, Floyd 2 HWs 9. 1910-19: Jack Johnson- only one listed, but personally I'd choose Sam Langford. Johns didnt defend much. 10. 2010-2019 Vasyl Lomachenko. Wins title 3rd fight-who will beat that record? Beat 3 undefeated, In 6 years he now holds 3 belts. 11. 1990-99: Roy Jones Jr. Most dominant, gifted fighter. Rate decade low because he had many fights he didn't take 12 1920-29: Benny Leonard, He beat every top contender, previous & future champs even though he retired 1925-short lived. 13. 1880-89: John L. Sullivan He started it. 14. 1890-1899: Bob Fitzsimmons. No dispute form me, I'll go Bob.
1. Henry Armstrong 2. Sugar Ray Robinson 3. Mike Tyson, 4. Carlos Monzon 5. Floyd Mayweather 6. Muhammad Ali 7.Joe Gans 8.Archie Moore 9.Jack Johnson 10. Vasyl Lomachenko 11. Roy Jones Jr 12. Benny Leonard 13. John L. Sullivan 14. Bob Fitzsimmons Using my own criteria, 1/2 these fighters wouldn't have made my Top 10. But because I based it on those who were nominated as Fighter Of the Decade, meant I had to re-categorize based on the decade, then fighter within that decade.
Reviewing this, it seems that I think the 1930s was the best decade of fights. 1. 1930s 2. 1940-1949 3.1980-1989 4. 1970-1979 5. 2000-2009 6. 1960-1969 7. 1900-1909 8. 1950-1959 9. 1910-1919 10. 2010-2019 11. 1990-1999 12 1920-1929 13. 1880-1889: 14. 1890-1899: This is very interesting. I wouldn't have listed decades as such on my own. But again-- using the criteria of who the supposed best of each decade was forced me to eliminate my personal choices that I thought were better than those named as Fighter of Decade.
Whilst I agree that it's very impressive, Langford was more or less a WW until 1910, fighting guys at HW. He only missed the weight by a couple of pounds for the Gans fight
