Randy Turpin lifted the Middleweight Title from Robinson in 1951. Randy was powerful, quick and very awkward. Sugar was a bit hungover from enjoying France but one thing Turpin did deep knee bends with herky jerky type of moves. Robinson couldn't do anything with him.
Going into the rematch Sugar Ray was on point, sharp and determined. He was also smart. He went to the films and studied Turpin. He discovered that when he threw a straight right at Randy that Turpin pulled his head up in the air to avoid it. It was effective Ray couldn't nail with the shot.
In the rematch Sugar Ray kept that info in his back pocket for 9+ rounds. He had been setting Turpin up. Instead of the straight right hand Robinson was throwing mostly rights to the body. In the 9th Ray gets cut badly. He needs that knockout now.
Rather than throw it straight Robinson throws the Overhand Right which connects on Randy Turpin jaw hanging up in the air. Ray as great as he was used everything at his disposal. Scouting the films. Later on he beat Fullmer with help from then films.
