Watched ESPN classics a while backin was the two Louis Walcott fights, both Joes were in the studio ,Walcott was asked who was the harder hitter Louis or Marciano ? He said Louis was "a rythmn puncher ,who got you out with speed and power" but "Marciano had the better single punch power"
Moore was a top light heavyweight puncher. As a heavyweight, there were many who hit harder. Moore had 4 fights with Chalres and Patterson and zero KO's. He took some light heavies the distance that a bigger puncher would have likely finished. I'm not saying Moore was a bad puncher. He just does not qualify for this conversation.
I think the show he is referring to was a show called "The Way It Was" which originally aired back in the 1970's. The show was hosted by Curt Gowdy. They would show an event from the past, mainly the forties or fifties--not only boxing, but baseball, pro football, college football, and horse racing, that I specifically remember, with play by play men and participants. They would watch the film and then the old participants would be questioned and comment. One restriction was that the show only covered events in which participants were still alive. The first Louis-Walcott fight was covered in one of the shows. Louis surprised Walcott by saying he didn't think Walcott actually won the fight. Walcott answered a question from Don Dunphy by stating that Marciano hit harder than Louis but Louis put his punches together better.
Correct again!,I would have thought the word clasics might have been self explanatory to SteveO ,but never mind.
Rocky Marciano George Foreman Jack Dempsey Joe Louis James J. Jeffries Max Baer Lennox Lewis Sam Langford Mike Tyson Sonny Liston Wladimir Klitschko Bob Fitzsimmons Tom Sharkey Mac Foster
....rocco - Thanks for the computer glitch info. Does that also explain why there's no Joe Louis on the post I mentioned? Would seem to be the only possible answer.
Well, it wasn't. The word classics didn't explain when the interview happened. Thanks for the clarification, old fogey.
I suppose there is no Merritt in mentioning Jeff ! ( by all accounts he could Bang -even broke shavers Jaw in Sparring - but couldnt take it himself ! ..but he looked one to watch for a short while )
The interview happened when both Louis and Walcott were still alive ok? Is the year of particular importance to you?
