What are your thoughts on Feb 25 '95, London Arena, the Nigel Benn-Gerald McClellan battle and after-effects...? PS Let's hope G-Man is as good as can be in the circumstances... and, let's also spare a thought for Nigel today
it was the best fight and the worst fight i've ever seen - took a break away from boxing after this one... people talk about the old school fighters but this was something else..
great fight. Benn wouldn't be denied - he fought with the most determination i think I've ever seen. He fought like his life depended on it.
Such a shame on many levels the way that fight ended, not least of all for McClellan's current health problems. Benn also went thru some serious mental anguish as a result. On a lesser note, Benn was robbed of the memory of a great result and performance due to the injuries McClellan suffered. The fight itself was something else - I thought it was all over in the first 30 seconds but then Benn came raging back like an injured tiger and showed heart and grit not previously shown by many fighters. It's also fair to say that McClellan suffered the head injury part-way thru the bout and that could be seen in his performance as the fight moved into it's final few rounds. All in all it was a savage encounter - it was Hagler v Hearns for 10 rounds! I loved it but as a previous poster said, I hated it as well.
the best and the worst elements of boxing. i encourage everyone of you to watch this, it is a great piece of film making and really shines a light onto the inner workings of this fight. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNjoM63rJ3I[/ame]
Nigel Benns golden moment which was destroyed by the unfortunate injuries Gerald sustained. Its a shame the fight will always be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Nigel never had much luck in his career Thoughts to the G-man. I emailed his sister last year and she replied saying Gerald was doing OK.
As I said on the British forum - great fight, a modern day classic, McClellan was a massive betting favourite with all the major bookies and newspapers - some reckoned McClellan would win in the 1st, many felt it wouldn't go any further than 6. Benn peaked that night, and left it in the ring afterwards, he was going to walk through hell to win that fight and truly did. The atmosphere I don't think has ever been matched in a British ring since Eubank/Benn I.
I remember exactly when this fight was on. Batman was on the other channel and I was like 7 years old. and I saw benn get punched into the ropes in round 2 i think n sed bye bye. but then he go up....
on the itv broadcast, they interview 9 british journolists. all 9 predicted a G Man KO win within 6 rounds.
my memories was that this was one of the best and most brutal fights i have ever seen. i had seen just about all benns fights before this fight but i had only seen a few clips of mcclellan. i can remember thinking a few rounds into this fight '**** me, gerald mcclellan is a ****in animal'. i couldn't believe the way he was man handling benn. i agree with what someone said earlier - benn peaked that night and he left his prime in the ring. that fight took so much out of benn.
Gerald McClellan was more than able to dismantle Nigel Benn.Eubank ran his arse off at middleweight to avoid him when McClellan was his mandatory,or it may of been weight problems but if McClellan fought at 168lbs before the Benn fight and fought the right fight Benn would`ve been ko`d definately.McClellan was a loss to boxing.
