It is probably the greatest fight I have ever seen, the atmosphere was electric with both fighters slugging it out until the very unfortunate end. So much heart, bravery and guts were displayed that night, it was incredible. My thanks go out to Gerald McClellan and Nigel Benn for sacrificing so much in that ring on that night.
Was ten years old and watched the fight with my dad. Vivd memories of the night and have watched it back several times. Great fight with terrible consequenses. A big memory from the night would be my dad saying what a long count Benn was given. Best Wishes to both of them!!!
G-Man was an utter **** outside the ring but no one deserves that. Plaudits to both for putting it all on the line.
Best fight I've seen, was in a pub in Sidcup and from being the only one watching it, gradually the whole pub got involved, we was screaming like nutters
An amazing fight with a terrible outcome. Both men brought everything they had into the ring that night and it's a shame neither of them were able to leave the way the entered. Agreed. After reading War, Baby, I couldn't agree more. It almost seems like karma, but like you said, no man deserves their life to be torn apart in the way Gerald's has been.
I was 12 and it's one of the very few fights I remember watching before I got into boxing properly in the last 3/4 years. I remember everybody saying how Benn had no chance but believing he did, not because I knew what I was on about just because he was my favourite fighter. I watched it with my Nan because my parents were out and I remember not fully appreciating the consequences of what I'd watched. Sas sad night.
Wow, is it really that long ago? My memories? I was a big Chris Eubank fan and disliked, not hated, Benn. I wanted him to lose but his amazing show of heart made a fan of me: a truely amazing performance. Of course I still feel sad thinking about what happened to Gerald McClellan, in fact it's one of those few times I've sat down to think carefully about the negative side of the sport I love. If you haven't read it, read 'War Baby' by Kevin Mitchell. A great read about the events that unfolded that tragic night.
Gerrald McClellan was a **** totally and im afraid no sympathy from me at all ...karma n all that ! ...was a top fight and Benn showed what a warrior he was ..
