It would be his defining moment...but he's too basic for the bigger, slicker, and more talented Sergio.
Sergio would definitely be the favorite, but sometimes I think that a really conventional pressure style behind a jab would be a way to neutralize Sergio's athletic counter-punching (a la MAB-Hamed) and Cotto's "basic" fundamentals might serve him in that fight.
Beating him at 160 will be huge but I don't know ATG is something special. The only HOF that Cotto beat was Mosley. Lets say that Martinez makes it also one day (for the love of god I hope that Zab doesn't make it). Are two HOF and titles at four categories enough for and ATG....maybe but still borderline.
Yeah sure it would be a big deal. No one with any sense or money thinks its much of a possibility. There is a better chance that Sergio slips and injures himself on the way to the ring, accidentally overdoses on a mystery drug, or is crushed by Fan man during the fight, than Cotto has of winning the fight via "ordinary" means. Cotto got a bit over rated and now he is more than a little shopworn. Sergio is going to steal his life force.
Everybody would suddenly come back to earth on Martinez, say Sergio was always a hype job and they always knew it and it doesn't mean anything. They would say it's ****ing ridiculous that he was ever higher in the p4p rankings than Donaire, JMM etc: In this particular case, they would be correct. This board, probably all boards, are about 70% haters.
Cotto would be rightfully hailed as a hero if by some miracle, but we all Know Martinez would decimate Cotto in brutal, unholy fashion.
I wonder about the double standard with Cotto and Pacquaio. When I made a thread about Pacquaio and Sergio at 154, noone would give any credit to Pacquaio if the fight was at 154. Yet for Cotto, it would be the biggest win of his career.
